The scariest part of the business, according to Dickson, is the fact that you can be RIFcd so easily. That means to be let go due to Reduction In Force. She said there is no job security in this profession. You can be here today and gone tomorrow. A student asked why the obviously photogenic Dickson had not gone into television work. She said she had just done several television commercials. She found it odd that they straightened her hair and would not allow curls. Your hair must either be straight or have whats called the anchor woman flip, she said. "They all look alike." According to Dickson, you get spoiled in radio. You dont have to have your hair done or your clothes perfect and your makeup doesnt have to be just right," she said. Im not on TV because Im not that sober. I like to have fun. The token woman idea in the media has Dickson somewhat concerned for women who are trying to break into the field. She said it seems radio stations in this area arent interested in you if they already have a woman on the air. Dickson calls this the One Woman Rule and hopes it will be broken more often. Radio stations have four time slots for shows each day, she said. Why only one woman? What does Dickson do for fun? She said people are surprised to learn she is a couch potato. Her favorite way to spend an evening is to stay at home with a bottle of red wine and watch My Fair Lady on Video.
