Show Arts & Entertainment Renowned Soprano Performs With Utah Symphony by Calvin L. Harrington composition ends poignantly with a shudder as the disillusioned Don Juan yields to Forum staff writer When Jessye Norman comes to Symphony Hall for one performance only on September 25 at 8 p.m., Utahns will have the opportunity to hear one of the music worlds most talented and respected voices. The Utah Symphony, under the baton of Maestro Joseph Silverstein, will accompany Norman in Four Last Songs? by Richard Strauss and Ludwig Van Beethovens Ah! Perfido. The latter is a dramtatic scena for soprano and orchestra. FourLastSongs was written when Strauss and ready to lay down was seventy-seve- n his pen after more than six decades of fruitful musical production. Four Last Songs are by no means for voice only; they are conceived as much in orchestral as in vocal terms. They aresymphonic songs in the truest sense. In addition, the Utah Symphony will perform Symphony No. 8 (Beethoven) and Don Juan (Strauss). Symphony No. 8 generates a mood of good spirits which reminds the audience that Beethoven had his merry moments. Don. Juan is a tone poem describing a man eternally pursuing with this tone poem that was women. It Richard Strauss first emerged as a man of genius. Three principal themes dominate this composition. The first theme opens the work and is fiery and tempestuous, symbolizing the restless and passionate nature of the man. The second theme describes the object of Don Juans longing (to find a woman who is to him incarnate womanhood, and to enjoy, in the one, all the women on earth, whom as individuals he cannot possess). The third theme is a vigorous and majestic one for horns. The hot-blood- ed disgust. Jessye Norman was chosen by the Government of France to participate in ceremonies commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Republic. That she was chosen to sing the French national anthem for Bastille Day (the Independence Day of France), is testament to her stature as one of the worlds most beloved divas. Attired dramatically in a flowing robe of red, white and blue (the colors of the flag of France), standing in the open air beneath the Arc de Triomphe, she was seen by billions of people on televisions throughout the world. This fall, Norman will give a special performance with the London Symphony Orchestra as part of Switzerlands 700th anniversary celebration. To list all of Jessye Normans accomplishments would require many volumes. Just in the past year alone, she has appeared with the London Philharmonic, the Leningrad Philharmonic, the BBC Scottish Symphony, the Montreal Symphony, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic; she has also performed recitals in Paris, Vienna, Toronto, Salzburg, New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C. Norman was bom in Augusta, Georgia. , Her father was an insurance broker, and her background is the educated, genteel black bourgcosic, as described in an article in the New York Times (one of her brothers is a medical doctor, another a sociologist). As far back as she can remember, she liked to sing. On Saturday afternoons Normans mother used to give her the job of scrubbing the kitchen. She didnt like this task, so it usually took her six hours to complete it. She heard the Bitchin' Camaro! I in Milan, Italy, as well as every major opera house and concert hall on the globe. Among her recognitions arc numerous honorary degrees from universities throughout the United States, as well as being named an Honorary Ambassador in J unc 1990. For her record ings, she received Grammy Awards in 1980, 1982 and 1985. Tickets for the Utah concert arc still available and range from $15 to $33. There arc special $50 tickets which includes a reception for Norman following the concert (only $50 ticket holders arc invited to attend). The reception will be catered by La Caillc and sponsored by KUED-Chann7. Later she attended the Music in Balti, Peabody Conservatory of more, Maryland and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. She won first prize in the International Music Competition held at Munich, Germany in 1968 and the rest, as they say, is history. A new, be tested on the Utah vehicle, which Chevrolet claims allows better vision of emergency lights from the side. Because officers are always climbing in and out of their cars while on roads, the new Camaro has shorter doors, which will allow more clearance between their cars and passing traffic. The car is only offered in a two-dobody style and a hatchback. The UHP rejected the hatchback model because of fears that police equipment might be damaged during a chase or an accident. Chevrolet has assured us they vc taken care of the loose equipment problem, said Gunrud. We will evaluate how much of a problem the shorter door is, and perhaps find some advantages that compensate for it. Other pol ice agencies around the country are successfully using the Camaro, so we feel we have nothing to lose by giving it a try, he said.
