Show Westminster Offers Support Group and Workshop for Adult Children of Alcoholics If you were raised in a home which one or both parents were alcoholic, you are certainly not alone. Recent research esti- mates that over 25 million adults in the support. Asking for help is difficult for ACOAs who have grown up in a family situation that established the rules ofdont talk, dont trust, dont feel. Taking the first step of being able to ask for help is a very important aspect of early recover. For those who are struggling with these issues, help is available in many forms, including; individual and family counseling, ACOA groups, workshops It is becoming increasingly recognized that COAs are often negatively impacted as aresult of growing up in a dysfunctional household. Although the negative effects typically extend in to adulthood, many adults are unaware of the connection between their childhood experiences and current difficulties. Some of the common characteristics shared by ACOAs include: a tendency to deny problems that exist; difficulty identifying and meeting their own or irresponsibilneeds, feelings of depression ity; low or guilt; an extreme need for control; a pattern of problematic relationships and intimacy difficulties; difficulty identifying, talking about and experiencing feelings; feelings of hurt, fear and isolation; an inability to relax; and difficulty remember- ing certain parts of their childhood. Recovering from the ACOA syndrome over-responsibil- ity self-estee- usually requires seeking outside help and Utah Legislators Pass Abortion Buck to Courts Continued from Page 4 streets. They force those with the money to flee to other states in order to gain abortion, thus transferring money that would stay in Utah to other states. They build an iron curtain around the state, forcing tourism down and possibly taking Utah out of consideration for the Olympics. As Elliott said, This bill will magnify Utahs bad image. Business will not come to a hot bed turmoil. Another question: is Utah prepared to fund the future education and Medicare costs that will be neededwith the passing of this bill? Given Utahs high birth rate, is the state willing to fund the needed higher education in public schools, concerning sexual practice and birth control? Is Utah ready to accommodate the increase in medical and welfare costs, which will branch in all directions from unwed mothers to complications resulting from illegal abortion. Is Utah prepared to handle the ramifications that will accompany this bill? I hope they considered these questions when they passed the bill. Or are they too unrelated ... not germane to the issue? and David Baddleys Work on Display at Finch Lane Gallery Continued from Page 5 irony of it, saidBaddley. This piece includes two piles of dirt placed five inches away from each other. One pile was taken from free land and the other from restricted Army land. After the show, Baddley is going to return both piles back to dig sites, exchanging placement of dirt. Baddley emphasized the humorous impact behind the exchange of soils by asking Is it ok now to stand on the Army dirt in the free land and visa versa? This calls into question what is what? Kim Duffin, assistant director of Finch Lane Gallery, aid, The administration of the galleiy really enjoy this work because it provokes peoples thinking. David is among an up and coming group of individuals in this area. It should be noted that Duffin commented that he didnt mean to be interpreted as saying Baddley is in a beginning stage, but part of a unique group of artists with modern ideas. There was a real good turnout opening day with viewers excited about Davids work, said Duffin. Comments on the register varied form good to very good, with one expressing views similar to my own, stating, the form and function of these works is unsurpassable. As I consider Baddleys photography works currently on display and Lane Finch at Gallery, I realize what gave Baddley his national recognition. It is as much his creative genius as his artistic genius. He has fused them together enabling him to see the beauty in what others miss, and he has captured the image of this emotional component of reality on film. This is a once in a life time opportunity to see these works brought together as one, a show not to be missed. The David Baddley exhibit will run through Feb. 15 at the Finch Lane Galleiy, located at 54 Finch Lane (on the southwest comer of 1 00 S. and site-specif- ic University). the Japanese Film Kagamusha, February 8 and 9 in the Converse Media Room, 7- -9 p.m. $2.00 per person, free sodas Issue 15 February 5, 1991 lunch hour per week.
