Show Heres To Radical Student Newspapers c Publish Views Your Anti-Semiti- (CPS) - Students and administrators at two colleges blasted campus newspapers in early October for publishing sentiments. One of the papers, at the City College campus of the City University of New York system, evoked a public reprimand from its school president for printingan anti-Semiti- c anti-Semit- ic column on its opinion page. Another paper, the intentionally provocative Dartmouth Review, provoked a firestorm of criticism and a giant demonstration by over half the student body when it printed a quote from Adolf Hitler on Sept. 28, the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. In the ensuing uproar, three staff members of the avowedly conservative, independently financed and strenuously controversial Review resigned. By warding off the Jews, I am fighting for the Lords work, read the Hitler quote, which the Review printed within its usual masthead credo, a Theodore Roosevelt nostrum. An opinion column by former student Vivek Golikeri in the Sept. 17 edition of the Campus similarly charged that City College is dominated by a Jewish clique" made up of powerful, arrogant people who often control everything. I was appalled by the blatant expressed in the column, said anti-Semitis- City president Bernard College m W. Harleston in a letter to the paper. We spend a lot of time listening to college officials who critique our rankings, said Robert Morse, a senior U.S. News and World Report editor who oversaw the college rankings issue. We also do a lot of research into creating better measures of a schools merits, added Morse, who said the magazine did change its ranking system this year to appease critics. The magazine ranks colleges on their academic reputation, student selectivity, faculty resources, financial resources and student satisfaction. Morse said this year researchers gave more weight to schools financial resources -- how much money is spent on each student -- andless to student satisfaction, measured by the number ofstudents who graduate in five years. The other three categories all received equal weight. More said it was the first year the magazine ranked special ty schools. Cooper Union, Money magazines best, "notably was missingfrom U. S. Cooper did get named the third best engineering school in U.S. News specialty rankings. Morse said the college rankings shouldnt be the sole reason why people choose to go or not to a particular school. In an article in the issue, U.S. News editors explain when two semesters at some private colleges cost can cost more than the average American earns in a year, the information provided by U.S. News constitutes a valuable service for those who pay the lofty bills. - A service of the Prevention Program Alcohol - How It Can Affect Your Health and Nutrition: Youre an average" American drinker. You like to have a cocktail after work, enjoy a glass of wine with dinner, or have several beers while watching the big game on T.V. You enjoy a drink now and again but you dont depend on alcohol to relax or to get you through the day. Alcoholism is one definite long-ternsk associated with alcohol use, but is not the only problem. According to a 1987 estimate by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, about 18 million Americans are problem drinkers. Alcohol is a complex chemical that produces a complex range of health effects and problems and you dont have to be getting drunk frequently to encounter these problems in your life. In a normal year, Americans average 2.65 gallons of ethyl alcohol per person, the equivalent of 50 gallons of beer, 20 gallons of wine, or four gallons of liquor. No matter how much youre drinking, alcohol is metabolized, or broken down in the body, at a consistent average rate of one-thian ounce hour. alters this rate, including per Nothing numerous cups of coffee or cold showers. While most of us may think that distilled liquors, like bourbon or gin, and fortified wines pose the most health risks, all types of alcohol produce the same wear and tear on the body. The best known sign of drinking too much is the hangover - the represents the bodys reaction to the toxic effects of alcohol. These effects can occur at very low levels of drinking - even before a drinker feels any intoxicating effects. Alcohol is the only drug we know of thats both fat and water soluble and which affects all the organs and tissues of the body. Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant and affects almost every brain function from balance to breathing. The liver breaks up waste and toxic substances in the blood, including nearly 95 percent of all alcohol present in the body. When alcohol is present, the liver temporarily performs no m pure-alcoh- ol rd moming-after-mise- Problems With College Rating System (CPS)-Amhe- rst Health ne ,, ry other normal functions until the alcohol is metabolized. Alcohol triggers a surge in the flow of digestive acids which can irritate the stomach lining. Nausea and vomiting are common consequences. Regular drinkingraises the brains tolerance to the drug so the user must consume more to achieve the same effect. Alcohol has been linked with higher rates of tumors of the breast, liver and mouth. The pregnant drinker faces special risks of miscarriage, stillbirth and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in her infant. A large hidden problem of drinking involves the ability of alcohol to deplete the bodys store of critical vitamins and minerals. Not only does alcohol drain the body of vitamins, it also slows absorption and retention of new nutrients. Probably the best way to minimize the adverse health effects is to simply be responsible about drinking - by being aware that alcohol is a powerful drug and treating it like one. It could also mean passing on drinking altogether for some people, particularly pregnant women and those taking prescribed medications -which can sometimes produce deadly interactions when taken with alcohol. If you choose to drink, drink moderately, reduce your intake ofjunk food, fats and excess sugar and exercise regularly.
