Show Pullman Creates Emotional Environments by Stacee Sherwood ' Forum staff writer Jana Lee Pullmans art work on exhibit at the Atrium Gallery provides a worth while and intriguing meander through the Salt Lake Public Library. Providing an added attraction for Utah residents, Pullmans art, with its subtle colors and moderate graduations, echoes the rock scapes that are indigenous to southern Utah. Constructed from her own handmade paper, she forms a topographical surface reminiscent of the natural forms she finds in the landscape. Pullman said, when I look at large rock forms I see the planes, divisions of space and the dividing striations and cuts which show the passage of time. I am attempting to capture that passage on the surfaces of my monoprints. There arent careful graduations but instead mottled patches of color, suggesting wear. The artist graduated from Brigham Young University in 1984, with a bachelors of fine arts in drawing and printmaking. Continuing her studies at the University of Wisconsin-MadisoPullman received a masters of fine arts in graphics in 1988. Pullmans eclectic work experience has enabled her to diversify her artistic talents. She has worked as a paper maker, a wax worker at the Wasatch Bronzeworks, a press assistant and an illustrator for the Salt Lake based O.C. Tanner Company. At one time she also owned and operated a small book press, the Western Slope Press. Her most recent endeavor involves binding and repairing old and rare books at the n, Jana Lee Pullmans artistic piece Blue Sky is one of many works on display at the Salt Lake City Public Library Atrium Gallery through April Marriot Library on the University of Utah campus. The Japanese sense of sparseness and space have greatly influenced Pullmans her art as emotional environments, saying, I try to express the weathered desert scapes ofemotion and the inner environments inside all of us. . .Incised and cracking, they are records of experience past and future; connections of earth and air grounded in self. Some of works currently on exhibit include: The Slope, Blue Depth, On the Horizon and Diamond Fork, among others. Pretty Woman, is a Modern Day Fairy Tale t by Jodi Hullinger Forum contributing writer Pretty Woman, a charming modem tale directed by comedy-fair- y Gary Marshall, is the 90s version of George Cukors My Fair Lady. It goes something like this...Edward day romantic (Richard Gere), a very wealthy, good-lookin- g and boring man, gets dumped by his New York girlfriend while attending a party in California. He decides to leave the party, cant retrieve his limo from amongst the barrage of cars and is forced to drive his friends brand new Lotus. Forced, because he has never driven a car in his life let me emphasize that he was that wealthy. Edward, not being adept at anything but making money, gets very lost on his way to his Beverly Hills hotel. As fate would have it, he has trouble driving the car and winds up stopped near a curb in downtown L.A., very confused. Nearby, an extremely low-budg- et prostitute, named Vivian (Julia Roberts), misconstrueshis car trouble as a proposition and sleezes her way to the car. He ends up paying her $20 to drive him to his hotel. Not being able to resist her unpretentious and childlike aura, he invites her to stay the night. That one night led to a deal being struck between Vivian and Edward; a deal that she would stay an entire week and be at Edwards beck and call, attending business dinners, polo games, etc., for the budget price of $3000. Here is where the similarities to My Fair Lady come to light. Vivian, the girl from the gutter, is taught by Edward, the epitome of class, how to shop, act and speak. She, on the other hand, teaches him how to and live. In keeping with laugh, lighten-uFair Lady, My they fall madly in love with each other. Furthermore, at the height of their realization oftheir feelings, they leave each other. , As in My Fair Lady, they are ultimately reunited. Yet, as mentioned before, this is a 90s version of the 1964 film. This becomes apparent at the end of the movie. In the earlier film, Eliza returns only to have Henry ask her to fetch his slippers. In Pretty Woman Edward rescues Vivian and asks her what she is going to do now, she replies that she is going to rescue him right back. This is definitely a more egalitarian, hence modern, relationship than that of Henry and Eliza. Both Gere and Roberts are great in the film. Roberts is hilarious as a tactless, small town girl turned L.A. prostitute. Gere, playing the suave, rich, attractive businessman is irresistible. Together they produce sparks. Although. Pretty Woman is a superficial, "everyone lives happily ever after fairy tale, it is very fun.
