OHair, an atheist, has presented a petition to Washington, D.C., that would ultimately stop the reading of Gospel on the air waves; it would also ban Christmas programs, songs and carols from public schools. OHair has petitioned the Federal a for broadcasting regulatory agency facilities, said Chuck Tripp, associate professor of political science. OHairs petition was accompanied by 27,000 signatures and has been granted a federal hearing. The hearing doesnt mean that the Communications Commission (FCC); Wellness Week Proves Beneficial for Students by Shane Gonzales Felt of the Forum staff writer Any student thinking of going into teaching as a career should learn as much as possible about learning disabilities and how to recognize symptoms of a disability condition, Felt said. PEAK Academy conducted fitness screenings, blood profiles and body fat evaluations for a small fee. A safe sex workshop was conducted as well as counseling for coping with religious differences and spirituality. The snack bar participated by serving Wellness Entrees througout the week. Ginny Mead, director of drug and alcohol prevention said the event went over quite well with the students and staff. Mead sai d students particularly liked the question bowl from which they drew drug or alcohol related questions and if answered correctly the student was given a key to unlock a prize chest containing Westminster items. Westminster students and staff had the opportunity to learn more about health issues during Wellness Week last week in Shaw Center. Several health organizations from the Salt Lake City area set up displays and booths with information on issues from drug and alcohol abuse to learning disabilities as well as general health tips. Among some of the health event was organizations set up at the and the Department of Health the Utah Aids Foundation. The Learning Disability Association of Utah was there as well to inform visitors about learning disability behaviors and possible solutions for those with the disability. The learning disability is an 4-d- ay information processing problem that can be in reading, language, speech or in any area of the learning process, said Connie . LDA. FCC is going to do what she wants, said Tripp, it will just decide whether the types of broadcasts in question are legal according to the Constitution. In my view, OHairs petition will not be successful. I think shes trying to infringe on other peoples rights, said Vasi Katsikathas, ASWC president. Just because she doesnt believe in it, doesnt mean that she has to infringe on other peoples religious beliefs. On March 24, 1990, Katsikathas presented a copy of the petition to the Utah Council of Student Body Presidents, so they could choose to act or not, according to their own wishes, she said. Eleven Utah schools were given copies of the petition. A lot of them will be taking it to their campus lobbying groups. The student body presidents couldnt believe that someone would try to pull something off like this. OHair is trying to infringe on peoples rights and heritage. Its the job of the family to decide on things like that, not the F.C.C. Katsikathas also has copies of the petition available in the DeMolay associations in Colorado and New Mexico, to decide whether to act themselves, and to notify their sponsoring Masonic lodges. This is a Christian dominated society, people believe in Christmas. If she doesnt like it, she should get out, said Chris Stubbs, freshman. Radio and TV cater to the majority, thats their job, he said. Fifteen years ago, OHairs efforts successfully saw to the elimination of the use of Bible reading and prayer from all public schools. The petition to defeat OHair, requires one million signatures to prove that enough people believe that Christmas programming should not be banned from public schools, and Gospel reading should not be banned from the air waves. There are so many important issues to worry about that complaining one way or the other about Christmas or religion on the air waves is rather ludicrous, said John Fritz, adjunct professor of social science. ASWC office. Just as the Constitution guarantees the freedom of speech to Mrs. OHair, it guarantees it to the people shes speaking against, said the Reverend Cheryl Moore, campus chaplain. Restriction of freedom of religion and thought is a really dangerous thing. It promotes prejudice and discrimination, rather than protecting us from it. The petition was brought to the attention of Westminster students by Christopher Diehl of Lodge number 19 of the Free and Accepted Masons of Utah. In addition to the activity at Westminster, the petition has been presented to the Utah State DeMolay Association, as well as the Table of Contents Earth Day" Career Comer a Lies for Sex Playboy Objections Page 2 Page 2 Page 4 Page 4 ..................
