Show Volume XXXVII, Issue XV Westminster College of Salt Lake City Tuesday, February 6, 1990 Scholarships Become More Difficult to Obtain Two hundred and sixty scholarships will be awarded for the 1990-9- 1 school year, totaling about $270,000, Ruth Henneman, Usually one out of two students that apply receive a scholarship, Henneman said; the ratio may change this year because of more applicants. The most important item the scholarship committees look for when choosing recipients is that the criteria required for specific scholarships is met. Other considerations include G.P.A., the amount of loans a student has, and the amount of credit hours a student has completed. A student with 70 credit hours and a good G.P.A. will be considered over a student with 16 credit hours and a good G.P.A., Henneman said. Other determinants in faculty-chosescholarships are a students behavior in class, attendance, and completion of class assignments. Funds for the scholarships come from a variety of sources, including director of financial aid, said. The number of people applying for scholarships is increasing every year, said Henneman. Approximately 500 students applied last year, and more are expected this year. rr V S -- 1 j n Westminsters budget, and outside I ? - i v, rv ' . 0 ii donations. Westminster Students Park Off Campus, Local Residents Complain by Tony Savas Forum editor Residents of Wilson Ave. met with Westminster College and contacted the Salt Lake Police in order to stop students from parking in front of their homes and blocking driveways. Burton said that cars park too close to the size of the campus and expect to park the stop sign on the street and park along right in front of their classes, said Burton, the curb until cars actually stick out into at any time, the lower Nunemaker lot is the intersection. less than 50 percent occupied, and there been have even in their are over two hundred spaces there. Its just as easy to park Students are just too spoiled because of on campus, Burton said. Students have been parking across the street, east of Westminster College on Wilson Ave., causing concern with area residents and Westminster officials. Mark Burton, head of security, said that residents have been complaining about cars parked on their lawns, blocking their driveways and parking on their curbs. The complaints came to a head when a Wilson Ave. resident, unable to get to his driveway, received a parking ticket from Salt Lake I Police when he parked on the street. Lou Gerbig, a resident of Wilson Ave. and a friend of President Charles Dick met with Burton and Dean of Students Gary Fitzer in order to solve the problem: A committee offour neighbors asked me to sign a petition, and I said no, said Gerbig. I felt I knew President Dick and I wanted to talk to him about it first, Gerbig said. The people around here are not going to bash in windshields, said Gerbig, we are just unhappy with the fact that we cant park anywhere. This year the problem is worse than ever before. Burton said that the Salt Lake City parking authorities wjll start patrolling the street andissuing tickets. Westminster parking tickets are only $5, said Burton, the city can stick you with $25-$3- 0 citations. it ? 4 I ' r ? w to" ' MU ' i t !-- , C i , Cars illegally line Wilson and block residents from their driveways. The separate criteria for each scholarship is established by the person or persons giving it away. We have to abide by what people tell us, Henneman said of the people who grant the money for scholarships. The results of scholarship awards will be sent out in the first part of April. The scholarship committees meet many times and it is a rather lengthy process," Henneman said. Dan Jones & Assoc. Conducting Survey at Westminster by Shane Gonzales Forum staff writer To learn more about drug and alcohol abuse trends on Utah college campuses, Dan Jones and Associates are conducting with students statewide. Representatives from Dan Jones are presently seeking 211 interviews on Westminster campus. Ginny Mead, prevention program director, said that students are encouraged but not obligated to participate in the 15 minute interview if approached by a representative. Questions asked during the interview deal generally with tobacco, alcohol and drug use. The information collected from the interviews will remain completely confidential. According to Mead, results from all surveys will be compiled and released sometime in May. The decision to publicize Westminster data will be left up to Westminster administration. Mead said she guesses that if any serious problems are found among Westminster students, they will be alcohol related. We may discover some drug use, but nothing too alarming, Mead said. If a alcohol abuse is discovered, then my department will be able to direct its emphasis to eliminate any problems. Dan Jones and Associates, noted for political polling prior to election days, recently completed a drugand alcohol abuse survey in Utah households and high schools. random interviews Table of Contents Converse Hall Problems ..Page 2 Photo Lab Problems..........
