Show "FifcT Flight School Enrollment Soars to New Heights by Bill Tatomer Forum staff writer "It is now possible to make in excess of $200,000 per year as a pilot..no wonder there is a rush to flight schools said Dan Taylor, director of aviation sciences. Taylor, a retired U. S. Air Force colonel with a broad range of flying experience and a distinguished educational background, assumed his position in the fall of 1987 and began making needed changes in the program. The aviation program was being run on a contract basi s by outsi de instructors.. dt was loosely associated with Arts and Sciences," said Taylor. "My main project was aligning the majors more closely with the business curriculum. There are four majors in the aviation program and three of them are general business majors. There is an aviation management major which has a professional pilot emphasis. This program consists of one-ha- lf person who can qualify as a commercial pilot. All of our graduates can getjobs today," said Taylor, "but the emphasis is changing. I feel that a liberal education background contributes to a better rounded, expansive, thoughtful pilot than might be found with a pure scientific background." Since the college does not have their own aircraft or full-tim- e flight instructors, the students get their actual flight instruction from one of several ' flight training schools in the valley, such as American Air Academy where fifty of the aviation science students are currently enrolled. The costs of buying aircraft and providing a full-tim- e flight director would exceed two hundred thousand dollars. Taylor said that this might happen, considering the dramatic increase in enrollment from fewer than 40 students in 1987 to 120 today. Taylor, who has flown fighter planes in Vietnam and 2 bombers for the Strategic Air Command, said he would like to be able to fly with the students, but all of the college instructors have overloaded schedules that wouldnt permit flying until the college decides whether or not to commit to expanding the F-1- 00 B-5- flying and general business.
