SMI LAKE CITY UTAH MO - - JSSSStTS Depression Recognition By Carol Dixon DART - DepressionAwareness, Recognition and Treatment Project of Utah is a pilot program sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). This project is designed to link depressed individuals, their families, and their general practitioners with the appropriate -- community mental health resources. The project's main goal, which is based on 20 years of research, Is to educate the public and its general practitioners about depression in order to reduce suffering related to it. According to DART chairperson, Tia Davis, NIMH research showed that a depressed person, in the preliminary stages, would usually seek treatment from a physician with some form of somatic complaint such as a stomach problem, headache, etc. The doctor would not recognize it as depression and, missing the diagnosis, the problem would get worse. DART is the direct result of a federal campaign specifically designed to organize "local" experts, from both the public and private sectors, to make information available to the public and initiate clinical training grants. (The School of Social Work, University of Utah, has recently been awarded a "childhood depression" grant.) The DART project also develops educational programs for general practitioners and mental health specialists as well as preparing special media kits and training programs for "tailor-made- " volunteers. Depression is a very serious public health problem. Davis said that within a lifetime one individual out of every five is western states. One reason is communities are smaller, people know one another, and the motivation to succeed and perform for everyone around is greater." The DART brochure defines depression (usually lasting two weeks or as having a very "down" mood; longer) in change appetite, weight, or sleep patterns; low energy; feelings of hopelessness, loss, guilt; thoughts of death or suicide; difficulty with thinking or remembering; loss of Dl HHC3 SMJ 60 OFF 18K OFF interest in everything. The DART handout "What To Do When A Friend Is Depressed" says that one must be able to tell fact from fiction. Scott Hill, counseling psychologist discussed the following myths regarding $ depression: Talking about depression only makes it worse. Hill said, "Until you are able to put a problem, an emotional problem, into words, it may actually seem larger than it MYTH: really is." People who claim to be weak are and just need to pull depressed themselves together. Dr. Hill related this "myth" to Governor Dukakis who sought mental health treatment following the death of his brother and the loss of the gubernatorial election. "In actuality it takes a lot of strength to say 'I need help and to be able to reach out for that help," said Hill. MYTH: People who talk about suicide don't commit suicide. Hill said, "If a person begins to talk about suicide, that is a secondary step which means he has already been thinking about it." Speaking from a mental health care specialist's point of view. Hill said this is one of the greatest and most painful fallacies we . have to deal with when treating a seriously ' individual. depressed DART can assist an individual with several different referral choices depending MYTH: seriously afflicted with depression.
