In many we or we are win situations, approval rejected; there is no second encounter. If we win approval, we have other chances to reinforce, or even improve upon the first impression. . Dr. Joyce Brothers calls this phenomenon the "halo effect." If we meet someone and are positively impressed, we may credit that person with talents and traits that may not have anything to do with the first encounter. For example, if a teacher likes the way a student looks on the first day of class, he may put the halo effect to work in a positive way and may give the student credit for being smarter than he actually is. The classwork this student produces is subjected to the halo effect and the student may make better grades than, perhaps, he deserves. If, on the other hand, a student makes a bad first impression, the halo effect could influence the teacher negatively. When this happens, the future conduct or performance of the student may not change the original negative impression. When the halo effect is operating in a negative manner, it makes no difference how successful or talented the student proves to be. The teachers evaluation may be more critical because of the negative first impression. In other words, it is verydifficult to undo a bad first impression. .first Included in the impression are clothing and accessories, grooming and hygiene, voice level and quality, and facial expressions and body language. These make up our physical appearance which has an immediate and definite impact on others. all-import- The halo effect is an important phenomenon to understand. It can be a critical factor in Job Interviews, sales presentations, and also in business and social situations. We cannot afford to make a bad first impression because, if we do, we may not get a chance to correct it Fbrum 7 |
