Approximately 67 percent of the responding males were in favor. According to Dean of Students Gary Fitzer, this survey is a followup to a survey conducted two years ago. This most recent survey has a two-fol- d purpose: to validate the first survey; and to keep up to date on student opinions and attitudes. Fitzer said, It is not intended for a specific response. Rather it is a part of an ongoing effort of investigating an on campus site for child care. ; According to Fitzer, the child care issue has been on campus for a long time. Fitzer believes Initially 1,437 surveys were sent out. 286 were returned. The survey included all nonresident hall students, faculty and staff. Another wrote, I feel because there are so many students with children this would enable these students to be more mobile at school and able to spend more time with their kids and be better off financially. Although this survey was not intended for a specific response, Fitzer said, "We are going to look at the information and I personally will be pushing for serious discussion on a child care center. Fitzer said, Either we make a genuine effort to find contributors or let the issue die and look at the alternatives. According to Fitzer. if there is to be an on campus child center the sites that have been looked at so far include the Carleson Conference Center, the green security house, and the old Opus game room. After meeting student needs, then it could provide child care for faculty, staff, member of the Sugarhouse community, and alumni. The source of funding for the center is a major issue. One student wrote, If the cost of such care would be solely the parentsgovern-men- t responsibilites (none to those not needing them) the idea is fantastic. But, if it would cost it stinks. Westminster costs are already too high and return too low. Another responded, Dont ask me to non-user- s, pay for it! Fitzer also believes that this would not be a free service, and those individuals using the center would pay a fee. Fitzer also suggests that the student government may desire to underwrite the program. He compares it to an item on a menu: He said, In some institutions, the student government underwrites some of the costs of child care, and it is viewed as part of a menu. Some students will take advantage of dances, others will use child care. Fitzer expects to present a' narrative concerning the survey to the Westminster executive staff and the student affairs committee within the Board of Trustees by the end of the month. Fitzer does not know the evenutal outcome but said, The institution has survived without it and probably would survive in the future. Forum 3 |
