I was informed by Director of Campus Life, Jackie Haus that it had not been sent, but would be out very soon. I was also informed that the entire amount of my deposit would not be sent; $1.30 would be charged to me for some fire extinguishers that had been stolen from Hogle Hall during . going to have to pay for it. Charging this amount to all the residents of Hogle Hall is wrong. ' In the first place, the residents in general are not at fault, and therefore the residents in general should not have to pay. It is well known that there should always be someone at the front desk to ensure the Halls security. It is also well known that often there is not someone at the desk. Also, advisers who 'there are four student-resideare being given free room and board in exchange for their assistance in keeping order and security in the Hall. Under these circumstances, something as large as a fire extinguisher should never have been stolen, let alone three fire extinguishers. No other building on campus has Hogles security, and yet the fire extinguishers always seem to be there. It seems to me as if the Hogle Hall staff is at fault, and not the Hogle Hall residents. Second, it wasnt necessarily a Hogle resident who stole them. During my stay last semester at Hogle I saw many people of questionable character walking in the halls who are rewere not residents. resident they quired to be signed in by the are visiting, and the resident is liable for any harm done to the Hall by hisher visitor. I saw many tmes, however, that these charac- nt Non-residen- 6 Forum ts UNJ enforce the policy, or the person at the desk did not care. - Third, even if a Hogle resident is at fault, the residents at large are NOT responsible. The current Residence Life Handbook states that. Where damage or theft cannot be attributed to specific individuals, but the Director of Campus Life (Haus) feels that the residents as a whole are primarily responsible for the damage or theft, an assessment may be made against the hall funds or individual room deposits. I feel that it is poor judgement on the part of Jackie that the residents as a whole are responsible for the theft of these fire extinguishers. Does every member of a community go to jail because the police cant find the robber? Several times during my residence at Hogle I saw the entire resident population being penalized for the actions of one individual! It is not fair. It is not right. It needs to come to an end. This, letter may not get my full deposit back, but I hope it will bring better dorm life by pointing out the injustice and staff incompetence at Hogle Hall. t In frustration, David Bengelsdorf Who You Want To Represent You (to be continued) . . . . ?
