Lib-Mo- st Wesminster students will never meet Bill Simmons, and thats a good sign. re-A- i the new Learning Skills Center Director, Simmons usually spends most of his time work- ing with students on academic probation, although his office provides many other servi- ces as well. i i 't f t i I Students who fall below a 2.0 grade point average (G.P.A.) will counsel with Simmons to find the problem. Together they work out a contract and Simmons helps them stay in school. Traditional students in their freshman semester will meet Simmons as the instructor of ID 100, "Orientation to College Success. He said there is a need to develop a system to get on top of things when a student first enters Westminster and really make it work to the best advantage of the student The lack of academic advising is a problem for most institutions of higher education, according Simmons. Thats where a lot of institutions fail , he said. Schools which require faculty to perform the extra tasks associated with academic advising rarely succeed in providing an effective program, he explained. Simmons said it is his goal to keep students in school and performing at their full potential. He is prepared to hel p students already on probation as well as those who may just be having trouble with one or two particular classes. The Learning Skills Center also provides a tutoring service to all students free of charge. Tutors are students with very high credentials. Simmons said he prefers the academic world to the ministry. Before coming to Utah he served as Dean of Students at Adrian College, a small school comparable to Westminster. He said he enjoys student contact and the challenge of helping students be successful. Simmons and his wife, Marilyn, live in Salt Lake and have three children and two grandchildren. Their interests involve many outdoor activities.
