In return for this face-lihas agreed to donate a portion of the running for a temporary track to mosquito and bird refuge and has contracted a portion to Savage Brothers for a gravel pit. of the basketball The recent floor was appreciated, yet long over due. Continued neglect and procrastination could have led to an even larger financial debt than what was incurred. ft Ducks-Unlimite- d recently had the unfortunate pleasure of visiting the Parson Mini, Mini Dome only to be attacked by a squad of mosquitoes taking off from the tailings ponds on the track. Running is a sport which is supposed to be enjoyable for the participant. Running equipment usually consists of a pai r of sweats or shorts and a good pair of shoes. Contrary to popular belief, this myth or fact whichever the case may be, does not exist at Westminster. There are a few prerequisites one needs to consider before attempting to run at Westminsters track. Forget the running shoes and buy a pair of hip wadders (preferably green), you may also want to purchase a dust mask and I Hiking Class enjoyed the beauty of Cecret Lake on Sat, Sept 28. Class Hikes Wasatch Trails by Bill Godwin If you should happen to sign up for PE 156 next fall be sure to make it a point not to be late for class. Its not that youll fall behind in the course work, but you may be left behind in the Westminster parking lot. PE 156 is the hiking class taught each fall by Tom Steinke, athletic director. For the first seven weeks of the fall semester the class meets every Saturday at 8 a.m. and by 8:05 they are headed out to hit the trail. Westminster students Bonnie McBride and Stephanie Young said that they took the class because they wanted the exercise and wanted to be outdoors. I wanted a class different from the regular, boring lecture classes, said Young. Karin Jaf fie, a student from out of state, said that one reason she took the class was because it is a good way to see Utah. On the Saturday I went with the class they hiked to Cecret Lake, a small lake located a few miles above Alta in Little Cottonwood Canyon. I was a little apprehensive as I drove to the class meeting place in front of Payne Gymnasium. I was wearing an old pair of tennisshoes, my boots being somewhere in transit between Phoenix and Salt Lake, and didnt have any snacks or even a water bottle. I envisioned arriving at a parking lot full of people ready to stomp waffles and with day packs stuffed with healthy dried fruit and other stuff. As it turned out, however, my choice of equipment (or rather, lack of it) exactly matched that of the regular members of the light-weigh- t, Fall K Imvites All by Danny Thiros Westminsters annual Fall 5k Run (3.1 miles) will be held on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. This years race will be held at Liberty Park, 900 South 700 East near the tennis courts. It seems that a hike led by Steinke is not your usual slow, plodding affair with numerous granola stops and a three course lunch cooked over a roaring stove at the destination. Instead, the hikes are streamlined to the bare essentials. They are a brisk walk through some of the best country to be found, where the greatest burden carried is a camera used to record the scenery. As we hiked towards Cecret Lake the view s was colored with the reds and of autumn, warm colors that seemed to mod the cold air that brought them out. The cold morning air way up in the canyon brought out a few new colors in the hikers as well. There were bright red noses and bluish fingertips until the walking warmed us up. Cecret Lake is small and shallow, a natural reflecting pool for the surrounding mountains. From the shore of the lake we had a good view of Devils Castle to the south-wes- t. The class started hiking from the point where the pavement ends just above Alta, making the round trip walk up to Cecret Lake and back total about five miles. Due to its walking-tou- r nature the hike was completed and we were back in the Westminster parking lot by noon, leaving the rest of the day free for other activities. The hiking class hikes many of the popular Wasatch Front trails near the Salt Lake valley, Some of the places hiked this semester included Brighton, Grandeur Peak, Doughnut Falls, Timpanogos Cave, and, of course, Cecret Lake. mini-cam- p squirt gun to keep down the dust (these two items are optional ). And of course one must not forget to bring a rake and shovel to level out the high and low spots. The runn ing track is a problem among many others at Westminster that needs some serious attention from administrators. Here's mud in your eye is an approprite cliche to descri be the condition of the track. There are, however, several alternatives to this problem: the best option of course is a d surface, yet this may also prove to be the most expensive. Another option would require some type of a gravel base to be used as a temporary solution until adequate funds are available for a rubberized surface. A drainage system must also be incorporated to deal with the rain and sprinkler run-ofThe running track is of course the last priority for the administration to deal with, however, this is something that needs to be brought to their attention. The basketball floor is greatly appreciated but the key to a successful intramural program is its facilities. Dont expect to come back to school next spring and see the track resurfaced. But dont say I didnt warn you. Happy trails and Heres mud in your eye." rub-erize- f. golden-yellow- Ducks come to rest in Dane Hansen Stadium Swamp.
