Weiss The impression one gets from Don Doxey, art instructor at Westminster College, is one of a man at ease with himself and the choices hes made in his life. Doxey, who received his masters in 1955 from the University of Utah, joined the Westminster faculty in 1961, after having spent time studying at The American School of Art and working as a commercial artist in New York City.' Doxey said that he decided to become an art instructor for a number of reasons, but a great deal of his decision stemmed from the fact that it is very difficult to earn a steady income solely as an artist Also, with the extreme competition in the art field an artist must devote constant time and energy to his profession, allowing little time to simply enjoy life. When Westminster offered Doxey a position as an art instructor, he decided it was a good time to come home. Doxey said he enjoys being a part of the Westminster Community. I like the smallness of the college, Doxey said. You get the chance to know everyone here, not only people within your department, but people from every department Doxey added that the size of the college allows the student and the instructor to relate to one another on a personal level. I feel it motivates the instructors in their teaching and the students in their learning. The art department at Westminster is small, with only about 12 people majoring in art. Doxey said that he encourages students to major in something besides art due to the fact that income as an artist is unpredictable. I try to encourage them to major in something that will provide them with some security. There are jobs in art hut its not easy to find them," he said. Doxeys beginning art classes teach students the basics of drawing simple shapes whereby the students learn to create the illusion of a three dimensional object on a space. On a more advanced level of instruction, complicated shapes, such as the human body, are studied. al Doxey said that one of the most difficult aspects of being an instructor arises when he has to deal with students who dont try. The most frustrating thing of all, said Doxey, "is to have a student with considerable talent that is too lazy to do anything about it" According to Doxey, when a student refuses to apply himself to developing his talent there is little an instructor can do to reverse the attitude. According to Doxey the development of skill in an artist is a gradual progression. Art," Doxey said, is a skill learned by repetition. You begin by drawing simple shapes and enlarge on them until you are able to draw the most complicated shapes. Doxey added that he believes anyone can draw if they apply themselves, and that really good artists are those who are willing to spend time practicing and willing to try new Besides his role as an instructor at the col lege, Doxey continues to pursue his career as an artist Doxeys paintings reflect western e and are sold mostly through life-styl- out-of-sta- te galleries. Doxey said that his dual role as teacher artist is comfortable for him. I enjoy having the combination in my life, Doxey said, In other words, I really like what Im doing.
