Show Forum Page 8 Gander Discusses Counseling Continued from page 7 When people come to see me, said Gander, we talk about whatever they want to talk about; I dont pry. When people want to talk about something, they will. Until then, its none of her business, Gander said. Gander says that one thing she always does in a counseling situation is to look for humor. She said that it is important for people to realize that there is something humorous in even the worst 'onditions. Gander said she doesnt like to be referred to as a shrink. I like to think of myself not as a shrink , but as an expander, she said. She thinks of herself as an expander because often, after people seek therapy, they begin to look beyond what things are like at present and look ahead to what their capabilities are, and they realize that they have the ability to change. Beyond her work as a counselor, Gander also works with the peer counseling program. In con- junction with this program, she is coordinating the Peer Counseling Conference which will be held on April 6. Gander also works with the testing of students, both in the academic area and in the psychological area. In addition to working with learning skills and counseling, Hockenberger and Gander also serve as student advisers. Hockenberger summed up her working relationship with Gander by saying that its ?. two-wa-y street. I help to coordinate and Gander helps to motivate," Hockenberger said.
