Show November 11, 1983 Forum Page 2 Sports Questioned The return of more intercollegiate sports to Westminster, signifies a strong move to strengthen the beginning in 1984-8schools image and help return pride and spirit to the students. Although many issues are yet to be answered, the addition of tennis, golf and basketball to the schools already established soccer program means that the school is taking steps forward, instead of backward, to build up the extracurricular side of its ledger. For the time being, the school has not planned to start any womens programs, although they are on the drawing board with the colleges reactivated athletics committee. They want to use the four sports named above as a building foundation upon which to establish a financial base for the athletics program and to help get the other sports programs off the ground. We agree with this direction. Although womens sports are being delayed, the start of too many programs could, potentially, lead to the demise of all sports at Westminster. 5, However, the athletics committee also has to worry about Title IX, the federal law enacted in 1974 which requires a school to match the number of mens sports with womens sports within fours year of starting an athletics program. The school is the already in its second year of soccer. That means, by 1985-8school must have four womens sports to match the four established sports. Can the school afford the costs of an additional 6, four sports? Equally important questions are: will the school be willing to totally support an athletics program at Westminster? Will quale recruiter? Will ity coaches be hired? Will there be a there be a total financial commitment by the school? full-tim- If the school does not back the athletics department 100 percent, can the programs succeed? The school already has a bad reputation in some parts of the Intermountain area because of the "fiasco of 79, when the school decided to drop all sports without a word of warning. Will that happen again? Finally, will the students be willing to commit 100 percent to an athletics program? Lets face it, the support of the soccer team the past two years has been nothing to write home about. The students also have to show justification for the return of sports to Westminster. Have the majority shown any reason for the school to return sports here? We think not Support by both students and the administration is needed to make these programs work. One is no good without the other. The return of sports to Westminster is - and can be - a positive move which, if handled correctly, will bring many valuable dividends to the school. Sports can provide school spirit a stronger image for the college throughout the intermountain west a valuable recruiting tool, and strong support for the g efforts. Bob Marselle Photographers Adviser Freshman students seem to have mixed reactions about not having a catalog. Doug Nickelson said that he is angry that he doesnt have a catalog. Others are not as concerned. One freshman said, "I didnt even know that I needed a catalog. It shouldnt be too much longer before the catalog comes out, said Green. Were hoping to see it in Allan A. Kuusisto, academic vice president, said that this period. It works well catalog will be effective for a two-yefor other colleges, he said, It should work well for us. Green said that the reason for the two-yecatalog is that, since its coming out so late anyway, it seems only sensible to make it for two years. In response, Sheryl Phillips, registrar, said that the information about the requirements is available. All you need to do Utah 84105. Reporters Students new to Westminster this year are still waiting for catalogs to tell them of the requirements for graduation in their majors. When catalogs are ready, theyll be effective for two years, according to Vice President of College Relations, Craig Green. There was so much to be done with the reorganization of the college that the catalog got put on the back burner. This is not an excuse, said Green, but it is an explanation. This summer our emphasis was on being effective as an institution. We were successful. said Green, Now we need to stress being efficient Green hopes that now (when everything is becoming organized) there will be no more mix-up- s such as happened with the catalog. Students reactions about the catalog, or lack thereof, are varied. Kenton Nelson, who works in the Veterans office, said that the general feeling of the Veterans is dissatisfaction. He feels that not having a catalog is a major inconvenience because it is difficult to schedule work schedules as it is, but it is especially difficult when youre not sure what classes you are going to need to take.
