He in the National was an All-Pr- o Basketball Association, averaging 21.2 points in his eight seasons with the Atlanta Hawks. His salary was close to $500, OCX) a year, making him one of the highest paid players in the NBA. But John wasnt happy. He felt he needed something else. That something else, cocaine, almost killed him. John, now a member of the Utah Jazz, knew he had a problem with drugs. It wasnt that he always wanted to get high. Now he had to get high. I put all my energy into getting high and then trying to hide it. Not many people knew I had a problem. Fortunately for John, Jazz coach Frank Layden and trainer Don Sparks finally approached him and told him he was an addict and needed help. Drew was then put into a Chemical Dependency Clinic in Maryland in late November. John said that I did it to save my life. And it has. Drew has returned to the Jazz and has been a key cause in the revival of the franchise, both in the win column and attendance. Since Drews return to the starting lineup, the Jazz have averaged 1,000 more fans per game and have defeated the three best teams in the Western Conference: Los Angeles (the defending NBA champs), San Antonio, and Portland. Before he finally got help, John said he lived a miserable life. I found I could use drugs for awhile, but it finally hit me. You cannot perform up to par when you use drugs. I then hit my emotional and physical bottom. 1 was totally unhappy. It affected my whole life. John first started using drugs in college. I was a social user. But that use became abuse, and the abuse turned into an addiction. I used drugs to make me feel good, because I liked it. Now Ive found out that 1 can feel good without it. John added that drug abuse is a disease; some get it, others dont. I didnt know I had a problem until gave myself a test. But knowing that he had a problem didnt stop him. The hardest thing is admitting that you have a problem. I tried to quit myself, but I couldnt. I was fortunate, though, because drug abuse will kill you. Youll either kill someone, someone will kill you, or youll be in jail. Im physically and mentally in a good stage. My health is great. I respect myself and players respect me more for what I did. Ive now got a grip on my life. I live the way normal people should live. Drew added, Im a better person and player. My enthusiasm is back, about life and basketball. John also showed some caution, saying, "My disease is incurable. It will never be cured. 1 can only manage and control it. The moment I irritate it, I will explode. I had to get it in my heart to realize it. Drew also advises students that, Its cool to be straight. Its not cool to use drugs. He also considers alcohol a drug. "I dont drink. I dont think anyone else should either. Ninety percent of the people that drink or use drugs will eventually get in trouble. Drew says that alcohol is the most dangerous drug much over, its legal and its not that expensive. Theres always a reason to drink. You can be happy or sad. But Ive learned that it doesnt help. John also said, If you have a problem with drugs or alcohol, dont be afraid to admit it. Drew added, If you had cancer or some other problem, youd ask for help. Well, its the same thing with drugs. Ask for help. Its nothing to be ashamed of. Drews comeback was highlighted by being named the NBAs Player of the Week for the week of February 28 - March 6. He averaged almost 24 points and 9 rebounds in four games, three of which the Jazz won. John is now looking to help others. I went into the Clinic to help myself. Now I can help others.
