Show Forum February 4, 1983 Page 2 United we stand: Divided we fall. An old cliche7, time-wor- n, with the impact of its message softened from use. However, those words accurately describe the situation at Westminster College. I stand, perhaps, in a rather unique situation. I am 'one of them,' a member of the administration staff. But first, and foremost, I am a student. As a staff member, I have seen the work done by the Administration, each of the steps which were taken, and understand the reasons those decisions were made. As a student, and the Editor of this paper, I have heard the reactions of students, staff, and faculty. The vast majority of those three segments have been encouraging and accepting. That doesnt say the people in those groups havent been concerned, or havent asked questions. They have. But their thought and reasoning have not been blinded by selfishness and fear. They understand what was done, and why. They support the decisions because they truly have the best interests of Westminster College at heart. For years, members of the internal College community have complained that something needed to be done to aid our survival as an educational institution of quality. Many things were tried. Soft decisions were made where hard, sweeping decision were needed. Without those decisions, the whole of Westminster would die. Everyone would be hurt. Everyone would be without a job. No one would be spared. There is not one person on the campus of Westminster who I want to see hurt, in any way. Unfortunately, there are some who will be. That cannot be helped, if Westminster is to survive as a whole. I can only pray that those individuals who are opposing the decisions made, and the actions to be taken, will deeply examine their motives to see if they, too, have the best interests of the uhok organization in mind, or if their motives are fearblinded, and their reasoning clouded. Fear and uncertainty are understandable. Selfishness and stupidity are not. One last comment. I have written this editorial from my heart. And before anyone condemns my comments, please, really think about them. No one put me up to this. I have written this as an appeal to the good, sensible, caring characteristics of all those involved. Westminster would not, and will not, just cut loose those who are not reappointed. They will be given any and all possible help to find new positions. Please, dont let us be destroyed from within, when the response from without is so poisitive. Hopefully this column will give students who love sports a chance for basketball tournament, John Madden, the Olympics, ESPN, and Mr. Baseball Bob Uecker. Now that Ive upset more than a few of you, Ill try to unglue the rest of you with a few predictions. The Lakers should repeat as NBA champions over the 76ers. the Boston Bruins will edge the Chicago Black Hawks for the Stanley Cup, and heavyweight boxing champion Larry Holmes will retire by the end of 1983. Look for John McEnroe to again be the number one player in mens tennis, with Martina Navratilova doing the same on the womens tour. I also like Virginia, St.Johns, Iowa, and Nevada-La- s Vegas in the NCAA final four. One final comment. I would like to commend the Intramural Department at Westminster. Richard Brockmyer and his staff do an excellent job. I understand they had some problems with football, but that will happen with players who take themselves too seriously. Bringing in experienced referees for basketball was the best thing the intramural program could have done. Lets hope more students appreciate the job they do. laughter, disbelief, and possible anger at my thoughts. As for my athletic talents, I consider myself average at best. As a fan, I feel I am an expert at every sport and should coach and referee every event I witness. Fortunately for the world, I do neither. I can also second guess with the best of them. Like all sports fans, I have my likes and dislikes. I love the baseball St. Louis Cardinals, but I hate the e Dodgers. The Dallas Cowboys are also on my hate list, along with Gerry Cooney, Danny Ainge commercials, Notre Dame, KSLs sports coverage, Roberto Duran mas, no mas), cheap shot football, and the baseball and football strikes of the early 1980s. My loves include the New York Jets, Wayne Gretzky, college and NHL hockey, the Utah Jazz (when all-tim- (no Seniors Clean Up Their Act It hardly seems possible, but for the graduating seniors at Westminster, this is it! The last semester! Graduation is only a few short months away. The light at the end of the tunnel is becoming clear. As the image in the light comes into focus, what can be seen? More school, a job, a hunt for a job . . . who knows? Either way, its another tunnel, and like the one we walked into when we signed up at Westminster, its hard to see the light at the other end. Looking back over the last 3 Vi years at all the papers, tests, late night reading, and the extreme moments of high anxiety that accompanied them, it seems that nothing could be a bigger pain than school that is, of course, until you take a good look at what lies ahead. After a brief encounter with facing the real world," it does not take much to realize how safe school really is. As the transformation from student to graduate is made, a person sheds his studenthood to gain his degree. Whether its a B.A. or a doctorate, the social stratification he held as a student is stripped and his status changes as do attitudes toward him. The new former student must now sink or swim on his own. Take, for example, his apartment: small, leaky faucet, unframed ski posters with numerous holes punched in the corners, strange furniture, clutter and, above all, cheap. For a student this place is ideal. Even a date would offer sympathy and understand why he lives there. If the apartment is dirty, a simple statement such as, Sorry its such a mess. I was up all night doing my homework so I didnt have time to clean it, will not only excuse his poor habits, but also gain him points for displaying diligence. After graduation, the situation totally changes. The same apartment will no longer do. Our graduate is no longer enjoying the student status; and now he is considered a filthy slob, wasting away his expensive education. A date would be thoroughly disgusted by exposure to both the place and the inconsiderate host. Like apartments, automobiles fall under the same set of conditions. Apartments and automobiles aside, look at behavior, another condition protected by the status of a student. At a party, for instance, a student participating in such things as drinking games, or demonstrating beer bong etiquette, or even sipping on an occasional Everclear and Fanta Grape, is viewed as a person with warm sociability, one who is afraid have not to a good time, and one who lives and enjoys life. Once this student trades in his books for a diploma and enters society, this same behavior would label him a lush, an obnoxious fool, a hazard to all, and someone who NEXT WEEK: The NBA and the Utah Jazz. Scott Kaiser should be chained to a bed at Raleigh Hills Hospital. If you are an undergrad and envious of the graduating seniors, take heart; your time will come soon enough. Enjoy the fact that you have to read five chapters by morning; dont worry if your room is a mess; so what if you drive a 65 Dart wagon; big deal youre hungover; its OK you are a student! If you are a graduating senior GOOD LUCK! Charles Johnson k I 5 The following activities are offered at the University of Utah to Westminster students, faculty, alumni, and staff.
