While at the hospital, the students must make the normal rounds like regular nurses. These rounds include medication, checking progress charts, I.V.s, oxygen and bedpans, besides other nursing duties. Students are at the hospital from 7:00 a.m. until noon. When they are finished with their rounds at 1 1:00 a.m., they assemble in a conference room for guest lecturers or student presentations. Their job isnt done when they leave the hospital. At home, students write patients papers. These papers include whats wrong with patients and what treatment and medication are expected to accomplish. They also have to prepare a full nursing care program each semester. This is like a full picture of what you are going to do for the patient, and why, says Lise Hainey, a junior nursing student here at Westminster. Freshmen and sophomore nursing students spend their time in the classroom preparing for their internship until their second semester sophomore year. They take such classes as biology, mictobiology, pre-assessm- anatomy, chemistry, physiology and nursing orientation. says Kecia Dunham, a freshman nursing student. Second semester students have nine weeks of clinical internship at the nursing home. And finally, as the sun sets, the nursing students retire with a fulfilled feeling, as one nursing student put it.
