The four questions chosen for candidates to debate were: Student financial aid, abortion, the draft and the economy were they key issues for Westminster students as Dan Marriott and Francis Farley, candidates, for the U.S. Congress squared off for the ninth round of their debate series. Over 200 people, including students, faculty, staff and members of the community packed into the Syme Lounge for Westminsters Noon Seminar, October 15, to hear this debate sponsored by the League of Women Voters and Common Cause. The debate was covered by Channel 4 News. Marriott took a strong stand for retaining the present administrations economic policies as a solution to this countrys troubles, labeling it his Students should level be very happy with the of financial aid they now receive. number one priority. Farley emphasized the nuclear arms race, unemployment and the patience to dig out the facts before making a decision, as important issues in this race for the 2nd District congressional seat in Washington. Farley is a State Senator and is challenging Marriott for his seat in Washington. Her opening statements took a more conversational tone as she used hand gestures and eye contact to get her points across to the audience. Farley said the issues were not Where does Federal financial aid for college students rank when you consider budget cuts during the next term? -- FARLEY: It is extremely important . . . There is a change in the kinds of jobs available, away from heavy industry to high technology. Math and science are extremely important and we must provide aid to college students to . . . keep this country competitive with the rest of the world. My opponent has voted against the Pell grant and against providing aid for science and math teachers. I would not do that. I would vote in favor of higher education and public education. Education is one of my priorities. I have four children in the system and I want a strong program, but it is the responsibility of the local government. One half of the Department of Educations $15 billion budget goes to college students as loans and grants. Students should be very happy with the level of financial aid they now receive. MARRIOTT: avoid pregnancy in the event of rape there were 1 .2 million abortions in this country that have nothing to do with these three things. 1 will go out to give these unborn children a right to life. FARLEY: lam personally opposed to it abortion. There is more to it than that. It is a very private and individual situation and I am not willing to make that decision for other women. Farley said she would counsel anyone considering abortion to do anything in their power to have the baby. However, 1 have never been raped or the victim of incest." There are things 1 believe that women can do to avoid pregnancy in the event of rape," said Marriott in rebuttal to Farleys comments. He continued, The right to privacy does not give anyone the choice to take another life. Do we need registration for the draft? FARLEY: No. I think that is a waste of time. It is the law of the land that MARRIOTT: I and see no problem with us registering they register so that the government knows who we are and where (continued on page 3) How do you stand on abortion and contraceptives for minors? Abortion is very clear. I am a MARRIOTT: for a constitutional amendment to eliminate abortion, except to save the life of the mother. There are some circumstances such as rape and incest where abortion could be left to the states discretion, but or Victims Returned No Arrests in Fishnap Caper Four goldfish were abducted from their home at 4 There are things women can do to Carlson Hall, October 6th. Their owner, Chuck Charotti, said he was angry at first. I saw a dead goldfish lying in front of my door. A note stating, this is what is going to happen to all of your goldfish if you dont pay the ransom. The ransom in question was one case of Michelob Light. The fishnappers said they did this for lack of anything better to do. They said they wanted to be fishnappers for a week, and that they had an evil streak. The dead goldfish lying in front of the door was the Godfather effect, said the fishnappers. Three ransom notes were found by Charotti. The first had each letter clipped and pasted onto paper. The second was typed, by a typist who wishes to remain anonymous. The third was a computer printout, carefully programmed and then erased from the computer, so not a trace of evidence would exist. The fishnappers changed their minds about the demand for the Michelob Light because "the fish were crying for their owner. A happy ending came when Charotti found his four goldfish swimming in the toilet at Carlson Hall, with the third ransom note taped to the toilet lid. It took half an hour to get all of the fish out of the toilet. One fish tried to swim up the plumbing and it was hard trying to coax the fish out of the pipe, said Charotti. I have no hard feelings. The whole thing is humorous now, said Charotti, a sophomore from Pordenone, Italy. The fishnappers said that they will reveal their identity at the beginning of second semester. Sur Snow |
