It is during these months that breeding, nesting and rearing the young occurs. During this period of time, these birds become ex- tremely susceptible to predators. Brooding hens become very protective of their eggs and young, thus making them easy prey. It is a difficult and almost impossible job to control all the predators that destroy nests and kill the young. However, one predator that we do have control over is man and his dogs. laws that pertain to training dogs on wild game birds. It is lawful for any individual or group to train hunting dogs on wild game birds insofar as such training conforms to the following provisions. It is generally accepted that the use of hunting dogs in pursuit of upland game birds and waterfowl contributes substantially to the conservation of these resources as well as enjoyment of the sport. To encourage the use of hunting dogs and at the same time protect existing wildlife populations, the Utah State Wildlife Board established a proclamation of rules and regulations governing hunting dog meets, trials and training. Briefly, this proclamation outlines what is required of an individual or group who desires to hold a field meet or trial with hunting dogs. this Furthermore, outlines the a) No training will be allowed during the game bird breeding season from April 1 through August 15, except in those areas approved or designated by the Wildlife of Division Resources. Dog training on state waterfowl owned management areas is restricted to the period of September 1 through March proclamation 1 in those portions of the area so designated by the area supervisor. b) It shall be unlawful to use any firearm, except pistols or revolvers firing blank cartridges, in the training of dogs on game birds in the wild during and closed season.
