Show 6 Thursdah, Mar. 9, Price, Utah e, : Sun Sport Spots 1972 to jf After a great deal of study and consideration the new of Utah high schools for competition has become a reality with a four division classification for football, basketball and wrestling. For the majority of the schools in what has been known as Region Four it means the end of bucking the giants of Provo and Orem. The new alignment may well be the most significant achievement of the administration of Carbon principal Loman F. Hutchings during his tenure of office as president of the activities association, at least for his school. Mr. Hutchings is retiring at the end of this school year which coinddently is the end of his two year term as president of the association. He leaves an enviable record of a comquarter of a century of service to the cause of school career his as and activities a high principal at during petition Wasatch High, Union High, and Carbon. A second glance at the new alignment in so far as Carbon is concerned does not come up all sunshine, however. The new region will be known as Region Six. It includes all of the teams presently in Region Four with the exception of Provo and Orem. Two teams in football competition will qualify for state playoffs. Under this setup last season Carbon would not have qualified despite one of the better teams in recent years. American Fork and Payson were ahead of the Dinos, who would have finished third under last seasons record in the new bracketing. The outlook in basketball was much dimmer, although admltedly the Dinos hit an extremely low ebb on the cage court this past season. The only teams Carbon beat were Uintah, Pleasant Grove and Lehi, but encouragingly enough the Pleasant Grove and Lehi wins came away from home. The new region will qualify four teams for the state tournament which would have left Carbon still way down the list on the strength of this past seasons performance. The fact of the matter is the Utah County high schools are very tough competition regardless of the sport. The new alignment is not going to make things that much easier for the Dinos, but at least they will be competing with schools of equal size. ol here-to-fo- re inter-scho- sss Utah Varsity Magazine, the prep sports edition out of Orem, has finally recognized Carbon High with a big picture of Carl Pollastro, the Dinos captain and leading scorer this year, in the current issue . . .
