These animals, 66 bucks and 84 does, were trucked to the Coons Springs area west of Columbia last Saturday evening and released, climaxing a long, involved process of getting antelope for an area that has habitat to support a limited number. About four years ago local sportsmen started pushing for an antelope transplant. The suitable habitat was land administered by the Bureau of Land Management and they are required to conduct a range analysis before any animals are released on their lands. The BLM did not have available money for this study until 1971, when the survey was completed. Then came the problem of where to get the animals. The Division did not want to take them from our Utah herds if possible, so we contacted Wyoming and asked for their help. The heavy winter in Wyoming had forced a large number of their animals into Daggett County on both the Lucerne and the Antelope side. The range in both areas would not support that many animals, and Wyoming gave the to move what was needed. Trapping and moving any big game animal is quite a chore, especially when a large number of animals is involved. To give an idea of the effort involved, this operation required about 15 men working for five days. First the trap had to be build this involves the actual circular trap which is approximately 100 ft. in diameter and also two wing fences running out from the trap approximately 1,000 ft. that are used to herd the amimals to the trap. A helicopter was used to run the antelope into the wings and then into the trap. After the animals are in the trap long burlap curtain is let down along the sides and this helps to calm them down. They are left in the trap over night to further pacify them and then the next morning are loaded into a double decker stock truck for hauling. Each antelope has to be carried by hand from the trap to the truck, and it is surprising how strong these relatively small animals are. f Dino matmen Golden Eagles of Southern Idaho, The Eagles faced a very busy slate this coming week as the 1971-7- 2 campaign is rapidly drawing to a close. Jensons cagers played the strong freshman team from BYU in the armory this past Tuesday, Friday the Eagles travel to Grand Junction to close out the regular ICAC schedule with the Mesa improved vastly Mavericks, and Saturday night its back on the home court again to host the Utah State Frosh. Tuesday, Feb. 22, the Eagles make the final road trip of the year, a jaunt to Rangely, Colo, for a single game. Ricks found the going rather rough on the road trip, dropping another game to Mesa the night following their appearance here and as a result Snow College took over the drivers seat in the ICAC race with a win over Dixie. The victory over Dixie assured Coach Gary Bliss Badgers of a playoff berth in regional competition at an Arizona site next month for a spot in the national 92-7- 9. the Eagles to a lead with eight minutes remaining. This came with big Sid Hansen and quick Jimmy Horton resting on the bench after getting into foul trouble early in the last half. Sortor popped in 14 points the second half to go with 10 the initial half to top the Eagle scorers with 24 points. Peterson contributed 19, Hansen 18 and Smith 15. Ed the Palubinskas, Australian-bor- n Ricks ace who is leading the conference in individual scoring, tied Sortor for game honors. The Viking sharp-shootbanged in nine field goals, several of them long range bombs, and was six for eight from the charity line. Nationally ranked CSI moved into the armory Saturday night after having a close call with Mesa at Grand Junction the night before and the Idaho Eagles lost little time in showing local fans that they deserve the ranking. In one of the most balanced scoring attacks seen in J.C. action here this season, no less than six CSI players scored in the double figures. The visiting nt Eagles ran up a 6 halftime edge and CEU could never quite recover from the shock. Although CSI had only an edge of three field goals over CEU the Golden Eagles cashed in on 16 of 22 free throws while the local team was 9 for 14 from the line. Rick Sobers paced CSI with 21 points, Vic Kelly, a 56 bolt of lightening had 17 and Dan Dresser and Willie Williams each had 16. Horton, Hansen and Peterson carried the brunt of the CEU offensive lead, Horton hitting for 19, Hansen for 18 and Peterson for 15. er 52-3- ICAC Standings Auto Protection With Comprehensive Eves, Troths and Fittings Our offers possible for you and every member of your family.
