The couple resided in Helper until 1941 when he accepted employment at the Ogden Arsenal. The military called again, this time the selective service system, in October, 1943. Mr. Payne saw action in the South Pacific in World War II as a radio operator in the Signal Corps. Discharged in January, 1946, he began his postal career the same year when the delivery routes were set up in Helper. Mr. and Mrs. Payne will continue to live in Helper where he has accepted employment with Jacks Radio and TV Service. The couple have one son, Gregory, Helper, who is married to the former Nancy Ann Cyfers. The reining letter carrier estimates that he has walked approximately 70,000 miles over the streets of Helper during the last 24 years of delivering mail. An avid hobbyist, his interests have ranged from photography, stamp and coin collecting, and fishing so he anticipates no problem in keeping busy, especially with the prospect of a new field of work in radio and television.
