In April of 1941, the Carbon Emery Fish and Game Protective came up with the Association, idea of attempting to transplant buffalo to the desert area near the Robbers Roost in Wayne County. Through cooperation of the Grazing Service, the Utah Fish and Game Department and stockmen who ranged their livestock herds in that area, arrangements were made from the National Parks Service to obtain 18 animals from Yellowstone National Park. The first herd consisted of three bulls and 15 heifers transported from Yellowstone by members of the local sportsmens organization using trucks and drivers supplied by the Grazing Service. Taking part in the transplant process were George G rivet, Dr. H. B. The first herd was released at Jefferson Wells near the Flat a few miles north of the Tops, famous Robbers Roost Canyon. During the fall of 1941, the herd remained fairly well together in the Rocst area. However, in the early winter they began to scatter. Two of the bulls drifted north and were traced traveling north and were last heard of near the Wyoming-Utaborder several hundred miles from where they they were released. It seems their instincts were guiding them back to their old habitat in Yellowstone h I I I I I H -- Park. The other bull along with one heifer traveled southwest and were last heard of in the Fish Lake area, Because the bulls had left, another trip to Yellowstone was a necessity. On April 17, 1942, five more bulls were transplanted in the same area of the San Rafael Desert. Subsequent migration took the herd south to the Henry Mountain range where it could winter on the Burr Desert and summer at heights up to 11,000 feet. The first hunt for these magnificent animals, the only public buffalo herd in the state, was con- ducted in 1950 with a limited number of special permits being issued. Similar hunts followed through the years. In 1962 during one of the special hunts, blood samples were taken from each animal killed which revealed carriers of the brucellosis organism within the herd. When the herd was first brought into the state it was tested for and inoculated against brucellosis. This was a brucellosis-fre- e herd so it must have been infected in Utah. The solution to this problem became the responsibility of the Utah Fish and Game Department. In the spring of 1963, the calves from the previous year were captured and inoculated. But this didnt take care of the adult carriers. Plans were broadened to set up a program that would eradicate this dreaded disease. First the department had to construct a capture corral. A site was chosen at Granite because the wanted animals fcould be herded in from either end. Fences and winged gates would send the animals into the corral of 2xl2s. On the morning of November 20, 1963, Fish and Game personnel gathered in Hanksville and airplane pilots began hazing the two herds that had separated on the Burr Desert and pushed them together about three miles from the trap. Then men on horseback moved in and pushed the herd. The horses labored to keep up with these massive animals who seemed to be moving quite easily. A full grown bull stands about six feet at the shoulders and is perhaps ten to twelve feet long. Eighteen hundred pounds is average although record trophies have gone as high as 2400 pounds. Bulls have a heavy neck and a massive, exceedingly broad head which is carried low. Horns curve outward and upward from each side of the forehead. Forequarters stand much higher than the haunches.
