Von Brandt. This white fire opal is the largest opal of gem quality in the United States. Although it is still in the rough state, the gem is splendent with flecks of gold and other hues. Mr. Von Brandt states the value of such a rough stone can hardly be calculated. As 0 of now, it weighs more than carats. New members of the board of directors of the museum, who assumed office the first of May, include Merrill Hamilton, Walter Maynard, and Dr. Orson B. Spencer, all of whom have contributed markedly in past months toward development of the museum. They replace retiring directors C. W. Petersen, William F. Reves, and Dr. Quinn A. Whiting. Other members of the board are W. Douglas Wilson, W. Holly Bry-ne- r, Wayne E. Johnston, Fred W. Keller, Harold O. Patterick, Dr. John Tucker, and Donald Burge, who is curator of the museum. Former members of the board who still participate in museum development include George H. Patterick, Jr., Arthur Rasmussen, ti and Ray Downard. James J. served as a member of the board during the period of the museums organization. Literally hundreds of individuals contributed their time and talents in gathering materials which are on exhibition, in preparing displays, in arranging cases, donating funds or materials, and in getting the museum organized and in operation.
