Show School Attendance Laws Explained THE Thursday, October 8, 1959 Page Eight SUN-ADVOCA- Contrary to the beliefs and understandings of many parents and some potential students, the laws of the state of Utah still require attendance of all children in school between the ages of 6 and 18, unless the child is excused for a specific reason, which is written In the law, by the board of education of the school district or its delegated authority. Although the law was changed somewhat In 1957, giving the board of education increased authority to release from school those who were negative factors in the school situation, it is important for parents to remember that the changes apply to. the rights of the board of education primarily, and in no way were they a lessening of the requirements for attendance of the pupil or the responsibility of the parent to see they attend or are legally Without going into great detail or quoting the law in its entirety, the following points are important for parents and children to remember: 1. Before 16 years of age there are only three legal reasons for exemption from attendance. These are in rare cases and Include: (a) Physical or mental disa- powers of the Board as can be seen). A check of registration is now being completed. Action will be taken against those not complying with the requirements of the law. Program Set for October 22 There are, of course, exceptions to every rule. .There will be some few students who are better out of school. It is the duty of the parent, however, where they feel their child should be excused from attendance to get the approval of the board of education. Contact should be made with John C. Winn at the Board of Education office, 333 East First South, Price, by those students and parents who feel they have a county.
