Show Pag JUST ANOTHER VL A The year, as everyone knows, i divided into weeks and it now sometimes :e. .s tha. each i3 dedicated to one thing or another. The 22nd annual National Wildlife Week, and however, is being observed March because we regard it as something special of the theme : Conservation in the Schools. Wildlife .Week is sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation and its state affiliates, but these organizations, embracing a mems, bership of more than 2,000,000 do not limit their interests to birds and mammals and fish. They rightfully are concerned with all natural resources, knowing that if the basic concepts of conservation are applied to them wildlife ultimately will benefit. Now, why should conservation be taught in the schools? Comparatively few educational institutions, particularly those under the college level, teach conservation as a separate subject because it is best understood, perhaps, when considered as parts of other studies. Resource conservation is a philosophy of an approach to life which, somewhat like religion, has many applications and implications. It might be well to list a few examples. In studying history and agriculture, the student learns that the Biblical Middle East (supposed site of the Garden of Eden) and Egypt once were lands of milk and honey. They, like what is now the Sahara Desert, supported thriving civilizations. The declines of these civilizations are due, at least in part, to improper treatment of the soil and water resources. Studies of science reveal the close interrelationships of all living things and dangers to be encountered when our lands are abused. Health subjects encouples needs for cleaning up stream pollution and protecting our outdoor recreation areas. Economics show how business is tied in with industry, agriculture, transportation and labor pursuits dependent upon natural resources. And, unless people are well supplied with the besic needs of food, clothing and shelter, they will have little time for or interest in such subjects as music, art, drama and litOT Two THE SUN ADVOCATE -- Thursday, March 19, 1959 'The Sun cate latuco Evehv Thursday By Thi CARBON COUNTY PUBLISHING COMPANY "ONI NIWSPAPC.
