The volume, with a hard binding, is entitled the Metallurgical, Chemical and Other Process Uses of Coal. The booklet contains the results of the first comprehensive survey ever made of the non-fuuses of soft coal. The volume is one of BCRs publications. The survey was made to show the versatility, present importance and future potentials of soft coal as an industrial raw material. At the present time such uses require approximately 110 million tons annually, or about 25 percent of U.S. coal consumption. The survey deals primarily with processes that are already in commercial use or have been developed to the demonstration-plan- t stage. The information included relates to process uses of soft coal and its products, coke and synthesis gas, as well as other coal products. More Than 4,000 Articles Used More than 4,000 articles, papers and books published over the past 20 years were used in formulating the survey. The publication cites more than 400 literature references for the aid of readers who want more extensive or detailed information. Following an introduction on bituminous coal and its characteristics, the information obtained in the survey is presented in condensed form in nine large tables. These tables show, for each process, ' the typical yields or unit requirements of fuel and power, the typical end products and their uses and the present and estimated future tonnage requirements of coal and coke. The nine broad process uses of coal include carbonization, metallurgical reduction of ores and refining; gasification; combustion ; chemical reduction ; hydrogenation ; solvent extraction, alkaline hydrolysis and limited oxidation ; other chemical processes ; and other products available from coal production and use. The burning of soft coal to produce electric power and heat, although not a process-us- e of the fuel, is included in the survey for completeness and convenient reference. About 75 percent of the coal used in the U.S. at the present time is consumed for these uses. uses of coal are those in The non-fuwhich coal or coke is used to furnish carbon for reduction ; or where coal is converted into other products, or where the residual products from the burning of coal and the materials related with coal in the ground are 64-pa- ge el Aid-to-Indus- el Take care of your pennies and the dollars will take care of your heirs and their lawyers.
