Show Page Twelve THE Famous Lost Words -- Vast Quantities of Its My Coal Found in "Go ahead, of way!" Drilling Operations Vast quantities of coal have boon found in the Clear Creek area by Three States Natural Gas Company. The drilling operations have disclosed the presence of large coal beds in a formation not previously known to contain coal. The drill bits also have cut through known deposits. Some of the wells have cut through as many as a dozen coal beds varying from five to 25 feet thick. The total depth of the coal from the various beds has run to 200 feet in a single well, Three States Natural Gas Company geologists said. The new discoveries of coal are in the Emery formation, which in the Clear Creek area starts 300 to 1000 feet below the surface. The formation is approximately 1700 feet thick. A formation above it, the Black Hawk, contains the Castle Gate and Hiawatha beds that are the ones mined in this area. A formation below the Emery, the Ferron, contains coal deposits that are mined where the formation outcrops in Emery and Sevier counties. Every well drilled in the Clear Creek area has encountered coal deposits in the Emery formation, Three States geologists said. There are no present Indications that any immediate use will be made of the coal discoveries. The beds are too deep for economical mining. The only apparent hope that the discoveries are of economic importance would seem to be through controlled underground burning of the coal for n liquids recovery of and gases used in chemical industries. Three States geologists have not compiled any reserve figures on the coal discoveries. With the wells spaced a mile or more apart they have found it difficult to trace the individual beds. hydro-carbo- Public Law 1 Right-of-W- ay youve got the right Whispered in your ear by the accident gremlin, these art the most famous last words of all. They generally precede many too many of all serious traffic of all accidents. And nearly 25 accidents, say insurance people, are caused by drivers who think but they have the right of way dont. Usually, the man who assumes he has the right of way is in a full of that impatience hurry that makes us bull our way through to save a few seconds. Or to think we save a few seconds. Actually, "haste makes waste is a proverb doubly applicable to it wastes both lives and driving time. It's been proved, too. A famous racing driver tried it not long ago. He made two drives the first through city traffic at the greatest possible speed, pushing lights, bending and breakthe secing most traffic laws ond over the same route, but driving carefully and observing all laws and the rules of courtesy. Yet his "fast trip saved less than 30 seconds over the one in which he observed all the laws! Even if you saved ten times that by taking chances in bulling through against both law and it just wouldnt be courtesy worth it. Youd be risking life and limb - yours and those of others for next to nothing. 10-mi- le Price Cafe Strike Thursday, April 8, 1954 SUN-ADVOCA- Highway 50 Brochure Nearing Publication A Highway 50 brochure is scheduled for publication on June 1 this year as the first project of the new National US Highway 50 Federation which was formed at Dodge City, Kansas, op March 20, according to Darwin Lambert of Ely, Nevada, federation vice president and chairman of projects. Compilation of data and photographs for the brochure is already far along, Mr. Lambert said, and the artist is starting work on the color cover and US 50 maps for each state. Sufficient financing to assure publication has already been received from fees for listings in the tourist business directory which will form part of the folder, he added, and additional listings are being received daily. The brochure is expected to be an annual project of the federation. Cooperation of all coast-to-coa- st state highway associations and local chambers of commerce is being asked to make the brochure as complete and accurate as possible. Information and tourist business listings will be received by Mr. Lambert up to April 25 for the 1954 brochure, but immediate action is urged to allow ample time for compilation before the press deadline of April 30. The Highway 50 brochure is a civic project on a large scale, with more than one hundred communities cooperating. Size of the edition will be in the hundred thousands, weighing more than ten tons. Hassell, county agent, points out. The supply of winter feed in the silo next fall depends a lot on the farmers choice of corn varieties. Farmers are fortunate. Much of the guesswork is now gone from a good corn variety, picking thanks to an extensive program that has been going on in Utah for more than 15 years.
