Show Thursday, February 28, 1952 THE 85 Chukars Survive 7000-m- i. Some 85 chukar partridges, survivors of a long almost 7000 mile flight from Turkey, are now at home at the Carbonville game farm. According to Rye Hyatt, farm superintendent, seven of the birds died soon after arrival here but he believes that those surviv-- 1 ing until now have a splendid chance of becoming regular in- -, habitants of the southeastern Utah countryside. These chukars have come to Price from Turkey through the efforts of Dr. Gardner E. Bump, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, who in the spring of 1951, made a survey of the state and chose Clear Creek canyon which knifes through the hills near Elsinore in Sevier county as the site for the planting of these birds. At that time, Dr. Bumps plan was to find a bird that would fit that habitat and the arrival of these chukars from Turkey is the result. There are many subspecies of the chukar partridge. These newcomers from the land of the Hellspont are almost identical in coloring with chukars the state has previously obtained from California and Nevada. However, the new ones are smaller in bone structure and will not attain the weight of their American cousins, Utahs bird experts believe. There is a slight difference in coloring, the newcomers being lighter around the head. Orange striping, the chukars trademark, is the same. Misfortune and not little my- stery attended the flight from Turkey. Originally the Utah game department had been notified that 217 birds were being held In New York City. quarantine Then the department was advised that 156 birds were to be shipped to Utah. However, as far as can be determined, only 100 birds were on the flight Gotham. Four were dead on arrival at Denver, where the shipment was transferred from United Airlines to Frontier. Nine- ix birds arrived at Salt Lake airport, four of them in such poor shape that they died before the , ry ty-s- seveothers'died soon Ser Captures PORT could have the additional birds, Egan immediately wired to send them along.
