Q Z purm - 6MX0HS Farmers intending to cooperate in the 1949 Agricultural Conservation (AAA) program and who aie planning conservation practices for their farms should take into consideration the usual need for combining several practices. This advice from David A. Thayn, chairman of the Carbon County Agricultural Conservation committee, was prompted by the fact that sometimes farmers think of conservation practices as independent of each other when in most cases practlces are more ef fectlve jn combination. The real purpose of providing assistnee for applying phosphate 1S the increase in giowth of plants that provide protection to the soil help to make it more productive. Terraces, unless supported by grassed waterways, the right crops, and proper handling of the soil, may be a menace rather than a protection. They may concentrate the excess moisture and increase the damage rather than spread the water and dispose of it without damage to the soil. Mr. Thayn advises farmers of Carbon county to consider the conservation problems on their farms and then plan the combination of practices which will meet the problems. Not all the problems can be met in one year so the most serious ones should be considered first. He emphasized that it may be more economical and more effective to keep land productive than to restore land after it has been Conservation is prodamaged. tection as well as cure. He urged that plans be made now for conservation under the 1949 AC program, with emphasis on a combination of practices to meet the most serious problems. Stressing farmer responsibility, he Where assistance is prourges: vided to help us carry out conservation practices, we as farmers have a responsibility to get all the conservation we can for each dollar of assistance. Your return per ere, return per dollar invested cturn per cow, or any way yoj ant to figure it, will be greatest hen your range land is properl;. tocked,Mr. McAllister stated. Some of the grass should see each year if the range is to remain productive. One of thr methods of eradicating noxiou weeds is to prevent growth of the green top by frequently cutting off the top growth, thus depleting the roots. An overgraze range reacts the same as a patch of clean cultivated noxious weeds the grass roots become less vigorous and eventually cease tc yield. Plants get the raw materials necessary through their root and manufacture the food in the when plant leaves. Therefore, are constantly grazed too close to the ground, their root system are also destroyed because of a lack of food.
