Show elks sponsor cartoons on letter Eg PAGE ELEVEN writing The national Write Em a Letter program, sponsored by the Elks War commission, gets under way today in The and thousands of other papers from coast to coast with the publication of the first of a series of 13 cartoons drawn by enlisted men in the army and navy. In addition to the newspapers participation in the campaign the Saturday Evening Post published four of the prize cartoons and a feature article in its issue of June 20. Each of the cartoons reflects the desire of the men in the armed forces to receive mail from family and friends at home and the entire program is designed to crystallize in the public mind the need for increased between the home correspondence and the front. It has been authorized and approved by the war department bureau of public relations and follows Secretary of War Stimsons recent statement that next to food and shelter mail from home is of greatest importance in building and maintaining a high morale among men in the service. The cartooning talent among the enlisted personnel of the army and navy in more than 50 major camps Sun-Advoc- prize-winni- ng and bases took part in the contest phase of the Write Em a Letter program. A local prize of $10 was awarded for the best cartoon submitted from each camp and these were automatically eligible for the grand prizes of $300, $200 and $100. All the cartoons are now on exhibition at the New York Museum of Science and History and will be shipped from there ot Omaha, Neb., where they will be a feature of the 78th Grand Lodge convention of the B.P.O.Elks. The Price club, in support of this program, has provided specially printed cards which are available at the club rooms and urges members to take time to drop a few words to boys of their acquaintance 4n the armed forces, according to R.
