Show C it FARM SUPERVISOR DEVELOPS MACHINE FOR TOPPING BEETS During the current sugar beet harvesting season Mark W. Johnson of Price, Carbon county farm security administration supervisor, has developed and successfully demonstrated a practical sugar beet topping machine which may revolutionize the industry, local agricultural experts predict. Simple in design, the topper consists of a rotary disc, slightly curved at the edges and which is to strike adjusted the beets at the point where the tops are to be removed. Just over the d dge of the disc is a wooden drum which provides a pressure table for the cutter. Motive power to rotate the disc is provided by the tractor to which the machine is geared. Mr. Johnson said that he had the idea for a long time and this year, when an acute agricultural labor shortage became apparent, he went tto work with R. B. Wakefield, Price mechanic, to construct a working model, which was completed recently after about two months of work. In practical demonstrations the machine will top between one and two acres of beets a day, depending on soil conditions and other factors. It razor- -sharp, barrel-shape- has topped a full acre of good beets in five hours, and a total area of about 10 acres was covered in the curr'ent harvest. Uniformity in the beets topped has also attracted much favorable comment. William H. Bennett, Carbon county agricultural agent, and Ray Branch, field agent for the Holly Sugar corporation of Gunnison, Colorado, have examined the machine and pronounce it sound in theory and excellent in performance.
