Show JANUARY THURSDAY, f HE 9, 1941 COLLEGE EAGLES PREPARE FOR GAMES Will Begin Conference Play On Friday Carbon college, hoping to mark up its second hoop victory, will entertain Branch Agricultural college's bas- -. keteeis on the local maple couit Friday evening at 8 00 oclock The following evening, the Golden Eagles will meet Snow college in another league encounter. Carbon High school will play Moab in a preliminary at 7:30, and the college crews will begin their game at 8:30 oclock. Thus far this season, Coach George Youngs collegians have broken even, winning by one point from Mesa college and then losing one to the same team. Other aggiegations in the junior college conference will play their first league games Friday night. Don Ross, forLed by ward, and Clyde Conover, guard, the Golden Eagles boast a squad which will be able to make a creditable showing against any sort of loop com- petition, although no championships , can be expected this season. Dick Owens, former Roosevelt center, and Ken Workman, former Vernal forward, are a pair of consistent performers who should have a good season ahead of them. George Platis and Swede Larsen are leading contenders for a guard position. Among the more promising forward candidates are Calvin Magleby, who played prep basketball at Monroe, and Reid Snow, who hails from Castle Dale. Six teams in the intermountain - junior college loop will open the season Friday in what is expected to be one of the hottest races in the history of the circuit. During the holidays, most of the teams engaged in competition and turned in some Coach Reed performances. Swensons college Wildcats displayed a powerful attack when they walloped Montana State 72 to 62. No team has been established as a favorite, but Snow college of Eph- raim, defending champion, is expected to have another powerful com- nation. Coach Tuff Linford of B. A. C. has four regulars from last season, Paul Baker, Harvard Hinton, Gail Duncan and Art Pilgrim. At Dixie, Coach Jay Tolman has worries of losing two men, Jack Woodbury and Hafen, to the National Guard before the season is many weeks old. He recently cut his squad to 15 men, and expects to present a fast, tricky aggregation. the Carbon games, other . .Besides loop encounters slated for this week- ins . top-not- ch Ba-na- rd Basketball Officials For Region 5 Listed By Prep Association Approved by the Utah State High School Athletic association to act as officials in basketball league play during the coming season in region No. 5 are the following 26 persons: Pres Summerhays, Clair Giles, Sumner E. Its difficult to put down in writing the thrill you will derive from this wonderful winter sport, but lug those skies up from the basement, rub on a little paraffin, and come on up and find out for yourself. COLLEGE LOOP RACE TONIGHT In a practice session preliminary to the Carbon games Saturday night, Carbon colleges squad, all of the players that were on hand, lost to Lumber 36 to 26 at the local college gymnasium. Minus the services of Workman and Owen, the Eagles had trouble in getting their offense clicking against the town crew. In a preliminary Saturday evening, Carbons reserves defeated Paysons reserves 30 to 22. Its darn tough on a fellow to have to start out with sad news, but we have to take the good with the bad, o, the bad: The building of the elaborate new ski lodge that was to have been erected by the W. Excellent films to be shown. A rabbit hunting team composed of ten Carbon county men met a team of Provo men last Sunday in Sanpete county to see who could kill the most rabbits. Everyone had a good time but the rabbits and the 234 rabbits killed by the men probably figured they never had a chance. The Carbon group, led by Barney H. Hyde of Helper, lost to the Provo team by an average of two rabbits per man. The men formed a circle and in bushman style scared the rabbits into the center of the ring. The rabbits were given a chance for their lives as the men let them rush through openings in the ring. No shots were fired until the rabbits had left the ring. In short, the men reported that just a few got away. At the present time skiing conditions are ideal. HOW BQINO PAID TO SAVERS The quest for the 1941 Carbon-Emer- y league basketball championship will begin this evening, Thursday, when Caibon High schools hoopmen tangle with Green River on the latters home floor. Friday night, Central will play at South Emery, while North Emery has a bye. If Jack Pressett, is not in shape to start this evening at guard, his place will be taken, by Boyd Bunnel, who has been developing in pleasing fashion, according to Coach George Young. Other starters will be Rex Berry and Lyle Bryner at forwards, Jack Bell at center and Joe Prezel at guard. Last season, Carbon and North Emery tied for the circuit title. In the regional round-robithe Dinosaurs tripped the Rangers two straight games to qualify for the state tourney and thereby claim, unofficially, the district league championship, also. North Emery lost nearly all of its mainstays, however, and does not appear at present to be a likely title contender, although theres no, telling what the boys from Huntington may accomplish once they get underway. Central and South Emery seem to be Coach George Youngs principal worries in regard to championship aspirations, and just which of these will be the chief contender will be decided in large measure tomorrow night when they meet at Ferron. n, of returns from the examinations EARMINGS Totals . ...12 30 6-- 14 ot snow-ride- PHONE rs j1 STORAGE CAMPBELLS TRANSFER &OVE6VM O Sunday brought out the most skiers thus far this season (about fifty).
