The request was backed up by a being pushed into T. W. the astonished paymasters face, and he naturally complied. Lewis, the clerk, noted the situation ot once and made a run into the gore with the thousand dollar sack of silver. The bold highwayman then cooly stooped and picking up the othe twosncks and satchel hinded them to his confederate who was on horse-bac- k near ot hand. Cassidys pal rode swiftly down the road, but the former was out of luck for a few moments as his horse got loose end started away. Passing safely through the lower part of town the robbers stophouse and cut the teley ped a short distance north of the graph wires. They also examined the satchel and finding nothing of use to them, in it, left in on the road. The sack containing $800 in lilver had been dropped near the power house in town, no doubt on account of its being too heavy .to carry, so their load now consisted only of the $7000 in gold. Reaching John U. Bryners ranch at the mouth of Spring Creek canyon and just north of Helper, they crossed his land and went about two miles up the canyon, where they turned louth over the ridge and continued on a trail which makes a perfect circuit of Helper, Spring Glen and Price, and being only distant from them about three miles. It was 2:30 p. m. when they reached the main traveled Emery county road between Cleveland and Price, and here they cut the telephone wire, but they were too late in doing so, as messages had already gone over the line to Huntington, Castle Dale and Cleveland where posses were being organized to intercept the men. At 4:00 p. m. the mail carrier met them this side of Cleveland and they were then but four or five miles ahead of Sheriff Donants posse which left Price at 2:00 p. m. The men were described as being one about 25 years of age and the other as middle aged. The younger man wore a black hat. blue coat and goggles, while the man who held Mr. Carpenter up had on a light slouch hat, denham overalls and brown coat. Both men were and appeared more like cowboys or common hoboes than desperate highwaymen. One of the men rode a grey horse with only bridle and no saddle and the other was on a bay horse with bridle and saddle. Each carried two six shooters and were seen loitering around Caffeys saloon during Tuesday. They had evidently laid their plans well and were there on time to prepare for the capture of the money. Mr. Carpenter and others followed the highwaymen down the canyon on an engine, but did not see them and came on to Price where the news spread like wild-fir- e. One posse left here under Sheriff Donant as soon as it could be organized, another scoured the hills from Castle Gate to the Emery county road south of Price. Three posses started from points in Emery county and at a late hour Wednesday they were hot on the trail. Dickinson and others were sent down from Salt Lake and were joined here by other men who proceeded to Green River where they would take horses and ride the country south of there. The affair has caused the most intense excitement all over the country, and will likely be the means of drawing the attention of state officials to the necessity of concerted action in obliterating these longs of audacious outlaws who reign supreme in Robbers Roost. The P. V. Coal company offered a reward of $2000 for the cap-toof the robbers and doubled the amount. A chance for some one to earn $4000. Latest news from the seat of war as we go to press, is that the Price posse has exchanged shots with the fleeing highwaymen and two horses were killed, but the men are still at large.
