Show consolidation the question of uniting the university of utah ind and the state agricultural college is one that is being discussed in many circles just now in view of the fact that the report of the commission appointed to investigate this subject may be expected within a very afew few weeks the deseret farmer no its editor neither publicly nor privately I 1 ha has s ever expressed an opinion on this matter the many rumors to the contrary notwithstanding when the writer was a member of the bacul facu ity of the state agricultural he did insist thit that the question of consolidation Eolida soli dation tion was one that belonged to the people of 0 the state and the stat state 11 legislature he insisted that it was no act of disloyalty on the part of members of the faculty of either institution ution to favor or view with disfavor disi the question or wisdom of uniting I 1 the two institutions if the work of the two institutions can be besl and most economically done by ana an particular plan we believe that neither local prejudices tor nor public clamar should interfere with the adoption of that plan it is absolute folly to say that members of the faculty of tile the state agricultural college who favor faver consolidation are disloyal to that institution ution and only blind fanatics could ascribe such motives to them he may believe that with consolidation the work may be much more effective with considerable less outlay ot of money and if such be his views it t is right and proper that he should express 1 ress them the hue and cry that friends of the college should rally baliv 10 0 o its support to prevent consolin con consolidation lation Is sheer nonsense we look to see many li honest briest sincere friends of that worthy institution most heartily fv f favor v its consolidation with the university on one site on the other hand some staunch and loyal friends of ahe university may deplore the agitation and use their efforts to prevent consolidation on soli dation both may be absolutely sincere and our plea is that we may ascribe honest and just motives to an all who may not agree with us on a matter of public policy let not our passions and prejudices overshadow our judgment but let calm and careful deliberation prevail now kow as to the question itself the governor at the instance of the legislature appointed a committee of most estimable careful citizens representing many diff different erent sections of the state to go carefully into the workings of both institutions and examine into all the details that the pub lie may have bave a knowledge of the situation heretofore the public has had to depend upon the statement of interested te tP rested parties and these have conflicted in such a way as to make such an investigation and A a revelation of the true situation highly desirable this committee has spent days and months con considering 9 the question and is soon to make a report the deseret farmer has no knowledge of what that report is to be and we believe the members of the committee have generally been noncommittal non committal as to their attitude the deseret farmer represents the agricultural interest of the state we desire to see here a great agricultural college because we believe most thoroughly in the kind of instruction that that kind of an institution may gaffer we claim that institution as our alma mater and we shall be jealous of any movement to hamper it in its work vork and progress we do not believe however that this Is a time to become hysterical but awalt await the t he report of the he committee which has had every opportunity to look into the question and consider tile the jasons reasons they may advance in advocacy of their particular plan carefully and solely upon their merits neither local considerations nor sectional prejudices personal enmities nor friendship have any place in the consideration of the question and we hope to see it worked out on its merits alone deseret farmer |
