In it complaint, the rate arsot latino oughl a reduction averaging about 50 cents per ton. The utilities commission on December 12 directed that the reduitiun be made on certain classes of coal. The carriers petitioned for a rehearing. The rate association directors gave six sjiecif ic reasons for rejecting the roinptoniise offer In a statement Issued through V. A. Tracy, president. The reason follow: "1. The offer Is so small it is exof tremely doubtful that it would-b- e any advantage to the coal consumers. "2. The heavy part of the present coal .hipping season Is past. A reduction for the next six months would and could now be applied to a comparatively small tonnage yet to be shipped. '3. We are convinced that tiie present freight rates on this coal to Utah approximates an average of at least 50 cents jcr ton in excess of what is reasonable, and in the face of railroad opposition this fact has been and can be further proven. 4. In our opinion the railroads action last month in asking for a rehearing stopped any possibility of obtaining a reduction for the present coal shipping season. It is believed, by continuing this case in an expeditious manner, that the reductions we are fighting for can be made applicable for the next coal shipping season. "5. We do not believe it would be for the best interests of the state to per ton reducexchange a tion for a paltry offering of but 15 to 25 cents. "6. We feel that all shippers and consumers of this state affected either directly or Indirectly by a reduced coal rate will support us in this fl fll4 utility may immnl, airly m tl,tKr la-h- i tl lrn rd 4-- r aubse-Jrjuent- 50-ce- ly nt , move.
