VanDerVeur, Manli, warden at the Central Utah Correctional Facility at Gunnison, was honored July 29 by Governor Mike Leavitt and the Utah Public Employees Association as one of two runners-u- p for the Earl Conder Outstanding Employee Award for 1993. He was recognized during a ceremony at White Community Chapel on Utahs Capitol Hill. Winner of the states highest award was Joyce B. Fox, Salt Lake City Board of Regents. The other runner up was John A. Mathews, Murray, with the Department of Human Resource Management. VanDerVeur qualified for the Conder Award by first claiming departmental honors as Top Employee of the Year. According to Lane McCotter, executive director. Department of Corrections, VanDcrVeurs career ...has involved several difficult assignment. Of particular note was planning for and opening a large but somewhat geographically isolated correctional facility. This assignment requires an enormous amount of planning, close coordination, and the ability to develop a team capable of implementing a detailed plan without benefit or phased execution. VanDerVeur was masterful in getting full cooperation and support of citizens and governmental leaders in the surrounding communities. He directed the hiring of over 200 staff members from a area and recruited over 240 volunteers who now provide 1,200 hours of service to the facility each month. He provides additional, valuable services to local residents through drug and law enforcement awareness programs in schools, a partnership with Job Service, making available a modern computer ty literacy lab and college courses through COMNET and VNET.and establishing (with the help of the Utah Arts Council) a rotating art museum in the CUCF Administration Building. The Aurora Second Wards Relief Society Sesquicen-tcnniproject, the Welcome to At Last! al Aurora sign, has been completed. We feel the sign is a nice addition to the town and hope it will serve the community for many years. We have many people to thank, including Mayor Larry Cosby and the City Council for their help with the cost of the sign. Thanks to Aurora Second Ward, Bishop Mel Yardlcy and Bishop Bob Bagley, who both gave their support, and thanks to the sisters who helped clean the bricks. Russ and Brenda Willden, Preston and Cindy Andersen and Jim and Ann Burr, met at the University Hospital Bum Center in Salt Lake City, where they presented the center with six quilts. At this time a gift packet was presented to each child in the center. The Firemen and their wives were given a tour of the Center. A Milford couple was arrested for possession of cocaine at Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison, on July 3 1 , as the pair tried to enter the prison to visit an inmate. Margaret Sue and Delbert William Carrington were not on the inmates visitor list and seemed to be acting nervous when stopped at the guard station, according to a spokesman from the prison.
