Show -- The Safina Sun. Wednesday. Mav 12. 1993 Richfield man serve on Wildlife Board Salina fourth graders plant trees on Fishlake Forest land A high adventure started in Salina Canyon when 75 fourth graders from Salina Elementary, three teachers, eleven mothers and one extremely brave father, boarded a school bus. As they made their way up Salina Canyon, anticipation grew rapidly. Things really began to heat up as they exited the freeway and headed for the Mountain Ranch Administrative site on the Richfield Ranger District of the Fishlake National Forest. A herd of deer watched the bus pass by, and when the door opened, 75 eager tree planters fanned out into the yard. Forester Allen Henningson instructed the students in proper planting procedures to help assure the highest survival rate for the planted trees. After their instructions, each adult was assigned five to six tree planters to watch over and provide with seedlings. Four Forest Service employees, armed with augers, proceeded up the draw digging holes for the 1 ,200 ponderosa pine seedlings. The tree planters clamored up the draw like an army destined to plant a mighty forest. Along the way, some of the TPs were attacked by cactus. The cactus embedded sharp needles into shoes, boots, pants and fingers. When the task was done, weary from planting, they again boarded ., Ur" the bus and headed back to school. Forest Service personnel on hand were Doug Oyler, Kent Chappell, and Glen Chappell of the Loa Ranger District; Gary DeLeeuw, Ralph Smith, Max Larsen, Allen Henningson and Ellen Daniels of the Richfield Ranger District. Teachers included Lee Christensen, Ellen Christensen and Deeann Tidlund. The Forest Service is very grateful for the assistance of these fourth grade tree planters and their companions. In a few years they will be able to point with pride to that section of forest - knowing they had a hand in making it such a beautiful place. A simple spray wont work. And it doesnt take much to realize that an attic full of dead bats would be almost as bad as the live ones. The only real solution is to build them out. All cracks and holes a quarter inch or more wide must be filled or covered, except for the one obvious entrance to the roost used by most of the bats. After they leave for the evening feeding, that last hole should be covered. If you suspect there may be some still inside, a good dose of moth balls or crystals may drive the remainder out.
