Single mothers with three children have to work hard. And I know she was angry with me, but I couldnt be angry back because I had heard her whisper, I could get fired. The population of working mothers in Utah is above the national average. And when we throw in working fathers, weve got a lot of people out there who may need to be called on to be parents from time to time. It may be a call from a child whos sick or a child whos injured or a child whos in trouble. It will probably be a call from a teacher. And that teacher and that parent and that child will need another link in the chain. Theyll need the workplace. Theyll need a business that recognizes that its good policy to allow a parent to go to school in an emergency. A business that encourages parents to be involved in their childrens schools. A business that understands that the quicker a school problem can be resolved, 'Jte more productive an employee will be. I made that call to Dannys mother ten years ago. And I bcljjvc progress has been made in that time as parents and teachers and businesses try to find ways to make things work. We have to see each other as partners. As team players. As vital links.
