Quay and Sharon Mecham, of Axtell. 1 have four older sisters, Maghan 14, Emily, 10, Rhonda 9, and Larua, 4. My grandpamets are Slim and Barbara Bown, of Gunnison, and Bemitta Mecham from Axtell. A birthday dinner was held in my honor. Lots of aunts, uncles and cousins also came to help me celebrate. I , i - W V' V- V Phone News Items 1 529-783- 9 Nicole Mecham Cancer screening clinic November 16, & 17th The Cancer Screening and Prevention Program, Utah State Department of Health, in cooperation with the American Cancer Society will provide cancer screening clinics for women in this area November the past year are encouraged to at- tend. A fee ranging from $5 to $27 will be charged - based on annual family income and family size. Appointments are necessary. Although these clinics are being held in church buildings, they are for all women regardless of religious affiliation. The November 16 clinic will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Richfield 2nd and 5th Ward Building, 444 North 200 West. The November 17 clinic will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the same building. and 17th. The clinics will include a Pap test, pelvic and breast exam, blood pressure check, hemocultkits to test for colorectal cancer, health educa16 tion information on risk factors, signs and symptoms of cancer, and referral for appropriate medical follow up. A mammogram is not provided. Exams are given by specially trained registered nurses. Salina Senior Citizen Center Friday, October 23, 9:30 to 11:30 -- a.m. Richfield Senior Center, October 27, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. There will be a charge of $5 for flu shots. People 65 or older, or those of any age who have certain heart, lung, or kidney problems - including children with cystic fibrosis or severe asthma; or diabetics; have severe anemia, or a type of cancer using medicines that lower the bodys normal resistance to infection should be immunized for influenza. The flu shot should not be given to anyone with a severe allergy to eggs, as dangerous reactions may occur, as the vaccine may contain small amounts of material from the eggs in which the flu virus is grown. Anyone in a high risk group who has ever been paralysed with Guillain-Barre-Syndrom- e, and pregnant women, should ask their doctor about any possible special risks they might have if given the flu shot. Oldtime story tellers day on Halloween day at Park The fifth Old Time Story Tellers Day falls on Halloween this year, and will be expanded to include an Patterns available SevierCounty Extension now has available McCall and Simplicity patterns. There are craft projects, shirts, pants, jackets, coats and hat patterns available in a wide range of styles and sizes. There are also some childrens patterns available. Centerfield 1st Baptist Church Singles invited to Hawaiian party Three-count- Happy First Birthday Open House to celebrate the release of a new book by Merrill Doc Utley, of Sevier, Utah. The book deals with the history of Kimberly and surrounding area. It is called The Ghosts of the Gold Mountain Doc Utley will be on hand at Fremont Indian State park Visitor from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to autograph copies of his book and visit with anyone interested in his research of the area. What could be more appropriate than an open house to celebrate a book called The Ghosts of Gold Mountain held at the base of Gold Mountain on Halloween day? Virge Christensen, Leavitt Christensen, Frank Paxton, and Taft Paxton will all be sharing their earliest recollection and stores about life in Kanosh and surrounding areas. DcEtte Peterson of Kanosh, and Millard High School, will be the moderator for the discussions. This activity has proven to be very exciting and informative each year. The end result is a video record of the oral history of the area. These videos are on file and available to be viewed at the Park. Starting at 1 p.m. each of the invited presenters will share their stories and memories and answer questions from the moderator and audience. Everyone is invited to attend on Halloween Day. y The Salina Stake Singles will host Sanpete, Sevier and Wayne County LDS Singles to a Hawaiian Luau for singles over 30 years of age. The party will be held October 30, at the Salina Stake Center, according to Leah Conover, who heads the event. They make their home in Manti. Carl returned to school at BYU where he completed his BFA in painting, and then earned his MFA in painting with a major emphasis in watercolor. He has participated in several joint exhibits as well as one man shows. Following graduation, Carl accepted a position as art instructor at Snow College, Ephraim. He is presently completing his 1 6th year as a teacher of art at Snow. He has taught many different art subjects, and is the founder and director of a highly successful annual two week workshop in composition and watercolor which runs each August at Snow. He also conducts several workshops each year in Utah and surrounding western states. Carl is a member of the National Watercolor Society and the Utah Watercolor Society, and is represented by galleries in Utah, Texas, Colorado and Nevada. William Cowper Sanpete's population doubles over the elk hunt Sanpete county unofficially and temporarily doubled in population recently, as about 12,000 hunters flocked to Manti Mountain for the opening of the elk hunt. The mountain is home to around 9,000 elk, a diminishing number due to the drought and cow kills which de The Central Utah Art Center announces the opening of a Water-colExhibit by Carl L. Purcell on October 15, 1992. Purcell was bom in Fillmore, in 1944, but his most memorable hours were spent in the rock canyons around Kingman, Arizona, where the family moved when he was 12. These early experiences among the rocks and sand washes have left an undeniable mark on his personality and his art. After high school, university studies were begun at Utah State University, however, this was interrupted while he served as a missionary in Germany for two years. Rose Westlund Nielsen Single Parent Employment program is tested in Utah Classes offered by Central Utah of Gunnison, celebrated her 80th 529-390- James peterson, son of Howard and Nancy Peterson, of Centerfield, enlisted September 17, 1992 into A Battery 1st Battalion 140th Field Artillery of the Utah Army National Guard. He is a senior at Gunnison High School where he participates in basketball and track. He also is an Eagle scout. Peterson will begin thirteen weeks of active duty training on June 7, 1993, and will be trained as an artillery cannon crewman. He will be assigned to a gun crew in the Fillmore Unit. After returning from his military training, Peterson will use the college assistance he will receive from the Utah Army National Guard to attend college. Program has received the approval of the US. Dept of Health and Human Services, as well as the U.S Dept, of Agriculture. The project is structured to increase family income by providing training, education, employment opportunities and emphasizing adequate child support collection. Scheduled to start January 1, 1993, the project will involve 1 ,600 families at three sites, Kearns, Roosevelt, and St. George. Utah, considered a national leader in welfare reform, began refocusing its welfare programs from income maintenance to employment in 1983, with the Emergency Work Program. This program is designed to help families move off government assistance and escape long term poverty.
