Very often, debilitation in an older persons physical makeup comes about because of low or poor fluid intake. Weve talked a lot about poor eating habits, but actually fluid loss can be as dangerous as lack of solid food. Severe diarrhea, for example, causes loss of body fluid, and if extended for a period of time, causes Hot day electrolyte imbalance. can cause exposure dehydration also Medications that draw fluids from the body cells can cause dehydration. And just normal daily activity takes fluid out of body cells. These consideration s bear out the need for routine daily fluid intake. Without sufficient fluid, body function slows and poor health can occur. If you arc a caregiver at home, or if you arc living at home alone, be alert to the need of fluid intake. A helpful technique is to provide a visible measure of daily intake. You might set an empty two quart clear glass or plastic pitcher on the beside table and discuss with them how much water poured into the pitcher to let them sec how much of the goal remains. At Richfield Care Center we are sensitive to the fluid intake of our they should drink. With each glass of water they drink - a glassful is residents and do our best to get them to drink the fluids necessary. We place extra water or fluids on each meal tray. We have fluid nourishments between meals. Our wonderful volunteer SunShinc Ladies serve the residents every day fresh carafe full of ice water at their bedside table. Southern Utah Junior Livestock Show needs buyers Wild &Crazy Kids The Southern Utah Junior Livestock Show will soon be underway, and according to Max Hartlc, a show official, it is hoped that the public will be more involved m purchasing these animals. The show will be held during the Sevier County Fair in early August. Hartlc says that people may not be aware that they can make a purchase at the auction. They can either purchase a part or all of an animal, and dont have to anything else until they go to pick up their cut and wrapped purchase. Hartlc says the show committee takes care of taking the animals to the packing house the customer chooses. The customer then picks up the meat and pays the bill at a later date. Hartlc reminds everyone that these animals are the top of the line. They are raised and groomed especially for this show and sale. The term living will is somewhat confusing. Although it does take effect while the writer of the will is still living, its main purpose is to oudine the conditions of the writers death. Unlike estate wills, living wills do not mention distribution of property after the writers death. Many people may think of it as a pull the plug law, but it need not be. A living will often does state that life should not be artificially prolonged by extraordinary measure when there is no reasonable expectation of recovery. However, a living will may also request that every lie saving effort be made. According to Dr. Barbara Rowe, resource management specialist in the Utah State University College of Family Life, durable power of attorney often is, but is not required to be part of a living will. This designates another person to make medical decisions if the will writer becomes unable to do so. This may be a spouse, child, or friend. Rowe says this differs from regular power of attorney in that it can either take effect immediately or be stipulated to take effect only after disability or incapacity occurs. Regular powers of attorney become void when the adult becomes incompetent or disabled. A living will can be as simple or complex as you wish, Rowe says. It can be hand written in plain language, written according to a foim, or drawn up by a lawyer. The only specific requirements are: 1 . The instructions be put in writing; 2. The document must be dated and signed by the person making the will; 3. It must also be signed and dated by two witnesses 18 years of age or older who are NOT related to the person making the will. They include those who are not related by blood, marriage, are not heirs and are not responsible for the medical care expenses. She says a living will can be canceled or modified at any time by destroying the original document or canceling the original will with a living will written statement witnewd, i; .ud and dated by at least one other pt Itcanalsobetani-l'u i'! in the presence of a witness must sign and date a written n.ikn ent to that effect.
