Show I Number 17 Volume 70 Wednesday, April 29, Redmond Clay Thars Salt in them thar Hills was declared in the early 1900s, and mining activity around the Sevier Valley began. What was once many mines has now been narrowed to just one salt mine - Redmond Clay and Salt. This week an Open House will show off their new office and warehouse facilities, now located north of Redmond. Geology reports show a salt vein running as far north as Nephi, and on the south through Sevier Valley. Originally the Poulson family owned property north of Redmond and started mining the salt in the early 1900s. In 1959, the Bosshardt family, owning land between the Poulson mine property, decided to dig up the corn patch and go into the salt business. In 1965 the Bosshardts bought out one of the Poulson mines. These two mines have since been connected and now just one mine exists. The last of the Poulson property was purchased by the Bosshardts in 1980. Over the years there have been big mining efforts just east of Axtell at the bottom of Willow Creek. The salt is only under about 30 feet of overburden so the mine is actually classified as an open pit mine. The vein of salt is estimated to be about 500 feet thick. The salt business has been on the upswing for the past ten years for Redmond Clay and Salt In 1973 annual salt sales were $220,000. Last year their sales were up to $2.5 million. Most of the salt is sold as road salt which accounts for about 60 of the total tonnage sold. The other 40 is sold as livestock salt, with a very small percentage being sold as table salt. Currently about 30,000 tons of salt are produced each year by the 1 Price 50 Cents 02 Salt Opel House, May 2, 4 - 6 p.m. company. Bentonite has been known as Redmond Shingles as it was used as a roofing material to waterproof buildings. The bentonite is mined in a separate location and is not a of the salt mining business. In 1959, the Bosshardts built a built in Redmond for $25,000. It was 40 x 60 feet and included the warehouse, crusher, screening and production lines. The salt was hauled to this building to be processed. The original building was added on to for about 10 years until 1968 when a building was built next to the mine for about $100,000. However production soon outgrew the new facilities, and a new building was planned in 1982. This was the year of the floods and good prices for salt. But then the bottom dropped out of the salt prices and demand, and these plans were postponed until a later date. In 1990 the plans were brought out of the closet due to the low interest rates, and construction began. The new facility has a 100' x 250' warehouse with a new 40' x 70' office. The new warehouse will allow the storage of a quantity of a variety of their products to meet demand and improve service. Presently there are sixteen varieties of salt as well as four additional Continued on Page 2 NEW FACILITIES FOR REDMOND CLAY & SALT: The last few months have been busy ones at Redmond Clay & Salt, as their new plant and office facility was con structed at the out of town site, "lne oussiidiuis and employees of the organization invite everyone to attend their open house Friday.
