Man surrenders after 6 hour standoff An Aurora man ended a six-ho- standoff with area law enforcement officers peacefully, last Sunday night. About 4 p.m. the Sevier County Sheriffs Office received a call that Ronnie Cox, age 34, had stabbed himself while intoxicated, and was headed for Richfield in a Chevrolet pickup truck. A call a few minutes later told the law enforcement officers that Cox had kicked in the back door of his fathers house, 290 South Main, Aurora, and that he allegedly had said that he was going to kill himself with his fathers shotgun. His father was not home at the time. Sheriffs officers evacuated the neighborhood, and closed off the highway through Aurora, as well as sealing other streets in the area. Traffic was halted for nearly five hours while officers tried to talk Cox into surrendering. During the time he was in the house, Cox fired more than two dozen shots with a shotgun, destroying the homes interior. Apparently, Cox had not fired the gun at anyone in particular, as the damage was at This was the scene last Sun- day afternoon and evening, as law enforcement officers tried to talk an Aurora man into surrendering. Discussion was brought up to seriously think about purchasing a second patrol car for this excellent price ($12,500). A debate session ensued, then a motion was made by Nancy Frame to purchase a second car for the police department. Motion carried. Financing will be looked into and a report will be given at a later date. The city will pay a $50 bonding fee, $15 state filing fee, and cost of a notary stamp for Recorder Betty Cowley to become a Notary. Presently committees are also waking on graduation requirements, curriculum ideas, subject correla-Uo- n and support between departments and the groundwork that will handle the financial obligations for the school. In reference to the above listed areas of caicem Shumway explained that they are reviewing the existing core instruction requirements and will base much of their instruction material around these concepts. They are looking at core instruction to take place in a split session time frame, a session in the morning and another in the afternoon. During the day time would be scheduled for specialty classes and special interest classes. Workshop classes would also be offered with a certain number of them being required for graduation. These workshops would be offered on a weekly basis. They will provide for extensive opportunities as well as learning opportunities that are best learned one-on-o- away from the school building. Presently rssociates are putting the ideas to be used in the core curriculum classes. These are areas where mastery would be required before graduation and would include such subjects as reading, writing and math. The associates are also brainstorming and coming up with a wide variety of ideas for curriculum. They are prioritizing ideas they feel are important to students here in this area as well as listing ideas that students would need and like to know when they leave school. Many of these ideas will be incorporated into the specialty class area. There is also emphasis going into the career and educational planning process for students. The associates want students to think early on about what they are interested in and provide them with as much help and information in these areas as is possible. Plans are coming together. We have come a long way since January and even though we have a long way to go the framework and structure and schedule are about in place that will allow us to proceed to an exciting year at North Sevier, said Shumway. |
