Sometimes they need love the most when crabby Ron Nielsen Richfield Care Center It seems a very appropriate time to talk about the need for therapeutic love, being valentine season and all. Loving and being loved is a vital need for everyone, not just children and young sweethearts. We Find in our serving at the Care Center, that senior citizens are especially pro.ie to needing love. In fact, its probably the best therapy there is for selfesteem and personal well-beinIt doesnt take a lot of effort to share your feelings with a happy and lifting smile, a kind word, and, as appropriate, a touching kiss. Your older friends or loved ones will especially enjoy those special moments of showing loving concern and a little extra attention. Do you love your mother and father, or grandmother and grandfather? Then show it. Let them know it with a bug hug and tell them so. These are the little things that really brighten their day and help them g. remember how great it is to be alive and to be loved. You have probably heard someone say, or you may feel it yourself, heshe sure isnt very loveable; its hard to be loving. Well, these folks need even more love than those who are loveable. Have you ever really thought about it? Why arent they lovable? Have you anything to do with it? Are they hurting or needing attention? Most of the time its human nature for us to reciprocate to others. Whats that special saying, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Well, thats very real, if you will love, you will be loved. If you express and show love, heshe will reciprocate. So, have a happy Valentines Day and many more happy and fulfilling days by being loved because you share your ove with others, especially your older loved ones and friends. 4k Susan Anthony and Reverend Anna Howard Shaw, national suffrage leaders, met with Utah leaders in 1895. Although the information comes from my parent institution it has raised some questions we need to clarify. Reduced light does affect a plants capacity to carry on photosynthesis, which provides the stores energy for the life processes plants carry on. Whether or not plants really starve or not is another question, but if factors necessary for life activities that we have no control of are reduced, such as l.gh. intensity, then we ought to limit those we can control such as water and fertilizer. The problem arising is whether or not the shorter days have reduced photosynthesis to the point that the plant has gone into a state. off-roa- ed sources will be preserved. Utahns say they'd be willing to increases taxes Nearly two out of three Utahns said theyd be willing to increase their taxes to fund the five year strategic plan for public schools if they have to pay the money out of their own pockets in taxes. This was one of the findings in a pool conducted by Insight Research, which surveyed 400 randomly selected persons throughout the State. The poll was taken in early February while the Legislature was in session. Large majorities also supported the following features of the five year plan: A personalized education plan for each student (70); More than 80 agree that smaller classes and more computers in schools would improve public education. 84 felt curriculum changes were needed for higher level thinking skills. 82 felt schools would improve in Utahs spending rose to a higher figure. 87 said that increased parent involvement in school decisions was necessary; 86 voted for more teacher involvement in school decisions. per-stude- nt Stranded couple rescued Continued from Page 1 he kept breaking through the crust. Kirk explained that he started out from their snowmobiles with matches but lost them and his flashlight somewhere while crawling. They both kept all of their clothing with them including their helmets that helped them maintain body heat. At about midnight on Sunday, Kirk explained to Pam that one of them had to make it to the cabin. At this point in time Kirk was so exhausted and weak from exposure that he couldnt go any further. Pam then went on her own to find the cabin, which took her most of the night as it was about daybreak when she finally found it. Search and Rescue volunteers had spent most of Sunday looking for the couple. They found the two snowmobiles and saw some tracks heading down the slope, but there was so much new snow most of the tracks were gone. Rick Porter and Todd McAlaster were two of the volunteers that went off the slope and found the snowmobiles. From there a base camp was set up at the bottom of the hill and several people traversed the slopes with snowshoes but were unsuccessful. On Monday morning this base camp was once again activated while others went back on top to look for their tracks once more. At about 9:00 a.m. Pam was found in the cabin and from there several started looking for Kirk. He was found by Kay Peterson about 200 yards from the cabin. An helicopter from the Highway Patrol came in and carried Kirk down to the ambulance that was waiting in Gooseberry. Pam was then taken by Helicopter to Richfield where both are being treated for exposure and frostbite. Many volunteers were used over the two days. Also there was donated food that was appreciated. It will also come out of the induced semi dormancy. If it is then rotated back into the dim light it will again have to resume some kind of dormancy in order to remain alive. In any case we certainly have many more bright sunny days in the Sevier Valley than they do on the Wasatch Front, and we need to do what is necessary to keep our house plants alive and attractive during the winter. A good dose of common sense is important. Just like your summer garden; look at those plants in the pots when you water them and at times in between. Dont just water by the calendar. They need your full attention at regular intervals. For more information call Clyde Hurst, your Utah State University 2 ext. Extension agent at 275. 896-926- al wide will be celebrating the event. Sevier Valley, most plants that are left there continue to grow as vigorously as in the summer. Those plants need as much water as they would use in the summer setting. Some plants such as Philodendron that dont require direct sunlight, grow as actively in the comers of my southside living room in the winter as they would in summer. If on the other hand, a plant is left in a north facing room and light is reduced gradually during the fall and early winter, it very likely will do very little growing and therefore will require less water. There are no good rules of thumb, unless it is to use your finger and stick it in the soil in the pot and see if the plants needs water, and look at the plant and see if it is approaching wilting. As for rotating plants from dark comers or rooms into light rooms, as was suggested, the thing that concerns me is that if the plant was semi dormant and it is put into bright light Junior Prom upcoming March 21st The North Sevier Class of 1993 presents their Junior Prom, "EveryI do it for You." thing I do The dance will be held in the North Sevier Gym from 9 p.m. to to 1 a.m. The Promanade begins at 9:30 and admission is $6 single, $12 ... a couple.
