In reference to item 3 it is suggested that citizens put their comments in writing so that they may be turned in at the meeting. One citizen commented that the public hearing was an opportunity to hear from the silent majority and not just a vocal minority. Citizens are urged to attend this pulic hearing. If you do not attend, then you have no grounds to complain at a later date that you thought it should have been done differently. A public hearing is democracy in action. As American citizens if we do not use our avenues of exercising our free speech and participaing in government, we abdicate this privilege and opportunity to exercise our free speech and voice in government. We become puppets at the whims and mercy of the governing body. A very important public hearing (Sumw uo There is nothing more relaxing than reading the newspaper. Right? Well, almost. Here were some of the headlines in last weeks paper that caught my eye. Police seek information on baby girl found in Provo River. GM is closing more plants after 1991 loss of $4.5 billion. (Just out of curiosity, do you know how much money a day you have to lose to total a loss of $4.5 billion in one year. T ry just over $1 3,000,000 a day. It seems to me that somebody should have noticed this trend a lot soonerthan after a year.) Report says BLM wastes millions on administration. (So what else is new.) And how about the officers in Emery County that stopped a motorist for speeding on The officer reported that the driver was shaking so bad during the stop that he decided to ask if he had drugs, weapons, or large amounts of cash in the car. The driver said he had $1 ,600 in cash. The officer asked to search the car and was given permission. About 200 pounds of cocaine were found in the car. But here is the kicker. Judge Jenkins ruling last week will not allow the cocaine to be used as evidence against the driver saying his 4th amendment right against unreasonable search had been violated by stopping him for speeding, then asking about contraband. Or how about the ruling against Hi Fi Killer William Andrews that denied his appeal for a fifth time in eighteen years. And here are the famous words of his attorney, "We intend to pursue other available legal avenues and appropri- ate appeals, The reason the attorney said this was he still believes that Andrews did not receive a fair trial. On the lighter side a person asked Dear Abby to help her solve a problem concerning whether or not she was a virgin or not. It seems she has never been sexually active and now she is ready for marriage and she wants her betrothed to know that she is still a virgin even though several years ago she was artificially inseminated and gave birth to a child for a couple who wanted one but were unable to have one. What do you think? Is she? One thing about newspapers, they are never boring. Even this week, here in Salina, there was a break in at North Sevier High School, my car was taken from my driveway and life goes on. Maybe will comment on losing my car when start feeling a little bit better and not quite so stupid. The stupid part comes from leaving my keys in my car. know, all about these things and will learn from past experience, but it is still a disheartening feeling when you are used to a lifestyle of trust and small town security and these feelings are replaced with doubt. A public hearing is a town meeting that is required for major city projects. This meeting gives all citizens an opportunity to: 1. Learn the details of the proposal; 2. Ask questions; 3. Express their approval or disapproval of the project. Some requirements that must be met in addition to a notice of the hearing in the local newspaper are: 1 . Minutes of the meeting must be kept; 2. A record of the names of the citizens in attendance; 3. Comments of the citizen input must be recorded. NSHS Girls Sevier County Sheriffs deputies upon serving a search warrant arrested three adults - and charges are pending on four juveniles last Saturday evening. Brooke S. Littel 21, and Jackson D. Shriber, 20, both of Monroe, were arrested, as well as Kandy K. Pris-be21, of Leeds, Utah. The adults were charged with supplying alcohol to minors and contributing. y, They were booked into Sevier County Jail and later posted bail. The arrests resulted when an informant supplied officers with information of a party involving drugs and alcohol, and juveniles. Officers are working to make arrests on other activities as information is compiled and received from confidential sources. It is better to know some of the questions than all of the answers. James Thurber Continued from Page Says U S WEST Communications takes service quality seriously and is committed to improving telephone service in this area and throughout the state. That is what Ted Smith, the companys chief counsel for Utah, said at a Public Service Commission hearing held in Richfield on February 27. The purpose of the hearing was to exam ine the status of telephone service and determine the need for developing service standards. Smith said a major fiber optic project is planned that will travel through the Richfield area forming a major link between Provo and St. George. The total cost will be $20 million dollars. Other planned projects include the replacement of mechanical switching systems with digital technology. Although were making significant progress, were not able to complete the projects this year. We cant make any firm commitments until funding is secured, Smith added. Company spokesman Gary Harrison said the company is not opposed to the idea of reasonable service standards. It already uses internal standards and reports to help monitor service quality. We believe, however, customers are the best judges of our service - we constantly measure service quality through independently conducted customer surveys, Harrison said. With this bonding, money and funding from the newly reorganized Permanent Community Impact Board will be able to build a nice, new facility along with the Applied Technology Center in Richfield. This is a major win for our area. Another important piece of legislation was House Bill 25, Big Game Management, which I am a cosponsor. This is an extremely important piece of legislation which requires the Division of Wildlife Resources to prepare big game plans. This will allow the interests of both ranchers and sportsmen to be protected from either having too m uch or not enough big game. In the past, state wildlife officials have not known the size of herds, much less developed any management plans. I was also able to negotiate with the Department of Wildlife Resources to allow night hunting of pheasant predators (such as red foxes and skunks) which will be regulated by county governments. The Department of Transportation (UDOT) is moving to centralize its services in Southern Utah. This will mean five new jobs in Richfield. This is quite a turnaround from one year ago when UDOT was looking at eliminating its operations in Richfield. I support this reorganization and will fight against any interference by the legislature. I would like to personally thank everyone who called and showed an interest in the process as well as all of those who answered my questionnaire. This was very important in helping me to make the decisions I needed to make. Overall, I thought the sessions was very good, and very successful for our area. - RECHARGEABLE LANTERN Holds Charge Ono Year, Has Bright Up To Krypton Bulb j , , ? 1 J- - |
