LINK UP AMERICA assists qualified low income households by covering 12 of the cost of telephone connection and installation, up to $30 per household. The program is financed by contributions from long distance companies. Forty three states are participating in the programs. Both programs are open to qualified low income households in participating states. Participation in programs of public assistance such as Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, or Aid to Families with Dependent Children is generally accepted as proof of low income status. The telephone is a vital link for older people who "need to stay in touch with family and friends or summon assistance in an emergency. However, the cost of installation and monthly service charges keep millions of low income persons from having telephones in their homes. To address the lack of telephone service among low income persons of all ages, not just older Americans, the Federal Communications Commission has set up two programs of financial assistance which can be adopted by state utility regularity commissions and applied to local telephone companies. A factory representative from Hesston farm machinery will be with us and will talk about balers. We expect he will also have a working model of a knotting mechanism. Also on the program will be the USU Extension Farm Machinery Specialist. Petroleum representatives will be on hand to discuss w'hat is new in lubricants.
