Composting is the process of turning clippings, leaves and other yard materials into a rich soil additive for use in gardens or around plants and shrubs. Compost heaps work by generating intense heat and biological activity. This breaks down the compost materials grass clippings, plant residues, leaves and carefully selected household garbage -- - into a rich organic substance. Compost heaps are clean and odorless and studies show that commonly used pesticides degrade - rapidly in compost piles. To create your compost heap, look for bins made out of plastic snow fence, coated wire fence or treated wood. Fill the bottom of the bin with a 4 to 6 inch layer or organic materials such as leaves, grass clippings. Next sprinkle a material high in nitrogen. Animal manure can also be used. Then layer several inches of garden soil and a dusting of ground limestone or wood ashes. Keep layering until you have about 5 feet of materials. If the pile gets too tall there may not be enough oxygen reaching the interior of the heap. The compostpile is a good place to use grass clippings and other organic materials, but should not be considered garage dumps. Dont use diseased or infested plant materials, meat scraps, fats or household wastes such as plastic containers, garbage bags. etc. In four or five days the compost pile should reach bout 140 to 160 degrees F. After five to six weeks, you should turn the outside of the old material into the center of the pile and add water if needed. After three to four months your compost heap will become uniformly dark and crumbly and ready to use. When warmer days roll around you will be able to the material to enrich your vegetable or flower garden soils.
